Resonable repair cost?

Featured Replies

I am new to this forum and need some advice on repair cost.

I have brought our Y-reg fabia to the dealership (authorised Skoda repair centre) we bought it used from a year ago. It only had 21,000 miles on the clock when I bought it and I thought the service and MOT cost would be barable. I knew that the car was leaking colling liquid and windscreen washer lipquid, but assumed that those faults could be repaired at resonable cost.

I got a big shock this morning, when the repair shop rang to tell me that there are a number of jobs which needs to be doing urgently.

Aparently, the leaking cooling liquid is down to the radiator, which needs to be replaced. The windscreen washer tank needs to be replaced because of a crack due to frost damage.

They discovered that a part from the power steering (steering rack) is leaking as well, which would cause the MOT to fail. On top of that, the roll-bar and parts of the front suspension are on its way out and they suggested this to be replaced whilst the car is striped to do the power steering work.

The initial retails quote for all of the above repairs, service and MOT, would be £1,600 but they offered to do it for £1,250 becuse I am a valued customer.

Is this a resonable price???

Wynns Powersteering Stop Leak 125ml from Halfords Price £8.99

My steering rack is leaking and the boots(?) are filling up or something. Rather than pay to fix it I tried the above stuff. Not garunteed to fix leaks and it isn't a permantant sollution but at £9 + some more fluid it's worth a punt IMO. Even if it doesn't work £9 when the potential price is quoted at £1250 isn't that much.

My local scrappy (ASM) quoted £90 for a steering rack with a garuntee of about 3 months.

Also probs get it done cheaper at an independant and a 2nd opinion maybe worth getting.

HTH Joe.
