Tyres and 17" wheels for Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

My Michelins have worn out in the front so do need to replace thinking about Pirellis' anyone used them on a 'normal' VRS Fabia? Also, what's the benefit of using 17" wheels over the standard? Surely this would affect the accelaration.

Any info appreciated.

Welcome.

Benifits of fitting 17's to a Fabia as far as I can see it,

1. Better looks

2. Cheaper tyres (more common size and more to choose from)

3. I think better handling, but may be down to type of tyre.

4. Room for bigger brakes ;)

Many thanks for for the info I looked at the pictures of your car - nice one!

Read an article on tyres looks as though using 17" rims on 205/40 tyres instead of the 205/45's on at present looks as though it will do the job and not rub the wheel arch. Any idea if the Skoda Octavia VRS ones will fit, it would keep the Skoda look?

regards

As you say you need to use a 205/40 as it has a lower profile, this conteracts the fact your going up a wheel size and keeps the rolling radius the same.

Disadvantages:-

1. Worse ride quality

2. Expense of buying them in the first place

3. Possibility of making speedo less accurate, even allowing for lower profile tyres.

4. Poorer acceleration

Just playing devils advocate ;)

Disadvantages:-

1. Worse ride quality (maybe, didnt think much difference in mine)

2. Expense of buying them in the first place (depends on how many std tyres you need, get a bargain 17" wheel and tyre package for less than the 16" tyres as they are an odd size)

3. Possibility of making speedo less accurate, even allowing for lower profile tyres.(Rolling radius difference works out less than the difference of a new and just legal 16" tyre)

4. Poorer acceleration (get it remapped, then youll like the grip factor).

Not many people replace all 4 tyres at once. And surely, they cannot cost that much. I'd imagine 17" wheels + tyres will cost at least

I believe, but could be wrong, a 205/40 has a little more rubber in contact with the ground due to the squarer profile of the sidewall. Probably only talking 5mm or less, but you never know - same width but a 45 profile probably has more of a "corner" at each edge. I could probably confirm this by taking a piccie of a 45 and 40 side by side, which I have lying in the garage... hmmm
