CV Joint where do I stand?

Featured Replies

My car was in the garage last week (dropped it off Monday picked it up Friday so as to make sure a proper job was done).

Basically I was adjusting my coilovers and noticed the inner passenger side CV boot had split and the grease had come out.

It obviously hadn't been long, as the grease was very fresh. I had probably done less than 200 miles since it had split.

I booked it in with the garage that did my suspension bushes, purely because they were helpful, well priced and did a good job with my bushes. The garage is an indie german specialist (BMW, VAG).

On the phone I explained what the problem was and also told them that the joint was knocking slightly when turning right and at crawling speeds.

I said that it would probably need a new joint however they assured me that since the car had been with them only 2 weeks earlier and it was fine then that the joint would in all likelyhood be OK.

So I dropped it off and once again told them it was knocking and once again they said that it was probably just needing greasing.

I left it with them and picked it up. They said it had a new boot fitted and was all greased up and there was now no knocking.

However after doing about 50 miles I've noticed that it is knocking again when turning right and at crawling speed

I havn't paid for the work carried out yet, where do I stand?

Right. I have just gone out and these are my findings:

Driving forwards at 30mph

No creaking/ knocking. However, when hitting a medium sized bump i.e. drain cover, I get a "clunk-clink" from what sounds like the top of the passenger side wheel arch.

Turning Right at 30mph

Creaking noise from passenger side only. Not really a click-click like a worn CV would make. No noise from drivers side.

Turning Left at 30mph

No noise from either side.

Turning Right at full lock at 5-10mph

The tighter I turn right the louder the noise gets. On full lock turning right I get a grinding noise from the passenger side. When I blip the throttle it makes a knock/ grind with each blip. Drivers side no noise.

Turning Left at full lock at 5-10mph

No noise from either side.

Reversing at 5-10mph on full lock, Left and Right

No noise from either side.

Coilovers have been fitted. New top mounts and bearings were fitted at the same time.

Droplinks were changed yesterday.

ARB bushes and brackets are intact.

When fitting the coilovers, we had a problem getting the top mounts tight, so we went to a garage to get them done with an impact gun. After this, the knocking went, however the knock I get now from the passenger side sounds similar to the knocking I had before we impacted the top mounts, only quieter.

The "clunk-click" from the passenger side over medium bumps has existed since fitting coilovers.

I am starting to think that its not the cv joint at all but the passenger side top mount.

What do you think? Any ideas? Its really getting me down.

check all the top mount bolts are tight for a start , then spanner check any other bolt that may have been undone , or just take it back to the garage to get them to check it

Exactly, take it back and ask them nicely to take another look.

  • 4 weeks later...

i think im suffering from these problems too!!

Just had AP coilovers fitted and am getting low speed creaking and full/decent lock left or right knocking

Had the ARB droplinks replaced and has seemed to stop most of the knocking but the creaking is still there! Also at standstill turning the wheels left to right you can hear some more knocking with window down.

Any ideas?

You will get some creaking with coilovers, I think its down to the stiffer springs and them moving on the perches.

I found the creaking reduced as they bedded in and I applied more grease, but I still get some creaking at low speed manouveres.

The sound I have though I don't think is the coilovers as it started about 2 weeks after fiting.

Its like a clunking noise from the left hand side over bumps, as though the top mount is loose even though it isnt, and a creaking "knock knock" noise when turning RIGHT at low speed and going straight below 25mph.

But turning left at any speed no noise.

cant be ****ed with it anymore tbh.

I get the same creaking on the AP's, just nature of coil overs I think.

It gets less over time, greasing around the base and top of the spring helps.
