Dashboard Rattle

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I seem to have a harsh rattle coming from the dashboard area, it seems to be directly in front of me (the driver), but within the dash itself. By rattle standards, it's a loud one, impossible to ignore.

It originally seemed to have a plastic sound to it, quite rattly in nature, although a few weeks ago it was joined by another noise, quieter and more metallic and more buzzing in nature (more of a vibration than a rattle). I suspect these noises might be related, but I'm not sure.

The plastic rattle is by far the more annoying though.

Anyway, I've found out a few other things:

1) It seems (ambient) temperature related; it's stopped now, but it happened again yesterday when the temperature went cold. It's been quiet since the recent cold snap though.

2) I can influence the rattle by changing from AUTO (HVAC) to a manual setting, some seem to provoke more noise than others, I think DEFROST was quite bad. I think AUTO might explain why it's been intermittent, I suppose the software is moving the vents about as I drive.

3) I also find that pressing on the long slim metal grille right towards the front of the dash, just before it meets the window, also affects the rattle. On one occasion it stopped it, another time it actually made it worse.

I have the car booked in to a Skoda dealer to be looked at, but I'm wondering if they will be able to find it when the weather isn't cold, because it basically isn't rattling at the moment. I fully expect it to return at the latest next winter though!

Anyone got any thoughts about what this might be, and whether it's worth cancelling the workshop time?

Cheers,

Richard.

I had a similar rattle on an 54 Octy Elegance hatch. It was consistent with the use of the climate control (which was always on).

In my case ....

Right under the lefthand side of the dash (above the passenger footwell) is an oblong "slide and click" panel which keeps an internal fibrous "radiator" in place (part of the heating and ventillation system). The panel had become loose and the whole lot was rattling like bugg*ry.

Push & click and the rattle disappeared. Perhaps there's one on the rhs as well?

Hope this helps.

Cheers

THe fibrous radiator you mention is the pollen filter.

I'll take a look at the weekend and see if my problem is the same, ta.

Problem is though, it's not been rattling for the last couple of weeks, except for yesterday (or the day before) when it went cold. That said mind, it was cold today and there wasn't a rattle...

  • 2 weeks later...

I've got a similar rattle but its coming from the centre console of the dashboard.

Fans/air con on or off makes no difference

Vents open/closed makes no difference

Storage thingy open/closed makes no difference

Can't stop it by touching panels, sticking fingers in air vents etc.

Its not the glove box or the ash tray.

Any ideas?

You tried the mipe coming down to the auto dimming mirror. This isn't stuck at all and a bit of double sided sticky trim tape etc works wonder on it

Well, had it back from the dealer just now, don't know if it's fixed or not because it had stopped rattling anyway (I think it might rattle when it's cold), suspect I'll find out next winter!

Anyway, they reckon that the long narrow air vent at the front of the dash on the left side had a few clips that were either loose or missing, they have replaced the whole vent.

Fingers crossed :)

GENIUS!

Its the sodding rear view mirror that rattles! Thanks for the tip.

Its not the wire cover thing but the housing itself. At least I now know where its coming from so need to figure out a solution.

Its been driving me mad - no wonder thumping the dashboard wasn't working.
