Interim Oil Change

My 2.5 V6 is currently on flexible servicing, last serviced at 19,000 miles and currently showing 28,000 miles, which I would think makes it about half way through it's second variable service interval.

Rightly, or wrongly, for my own peace of mind, I'd like to do an oil and filter change ( I have the correct VW 507 00 oil and the filter from GSF).

I'm quite happy to do this myself, but would like to ask some advice regarding the service interval setting, which the manual shows can be changed by pressing various buttons in a number of ways.

Should I just do the oil change and leave everything as it is (on the flexible interval) or change it to the fixed interval and start the new period from the time of the oil change?

Are there any implications to changing the oil and filter and not informing the car? Are there any implications regarding the owner playing with the service intervals?

Obviously you are not happy / convinced about the variable servicing, so service the car and reset the service indicator as per the handbook, this will revert the car to fixed (time & distance) servicing.

Bear in mind if there is any warranty left then you will no longer be covered as it wasn't serviced by a VAT registered garage.

Only if you say so, as long as you use the correct parts (i'd get a manufactures branded filter) there shouldn't be any issues, as they will find the correct grade oil and filter and suspect nothing.

It's true to say they may never know (unless the MK Secret Police are snooping) but technically servicing it oneself will invalidate your warranty, unless of course one is VAT registered.

Thanks for that. The car is out of warranty in about 6 weeks time, so perhaps the best thing to do would be to wait until it is officially "out of warranty".

This is a new experience for me, all my previous cars have been long "out of warranty", so immediate oil, filter, brake fluid, anti-freeze change were always the things I did first, knowing that it could only improve matters. Seems strange at the moment ....

I'm only advocating that to supplement a proper dealer service Foxy, as you say rolling in with a major failure after 50k and saying you dropped the oil every 10k won't work.
