Memory Cards for Columbus unit

Featured Replies

I'm hoping my Superb will get delivered this month, and am contemplating the issue of downloading music to the Columbus unit. I couldn't find anything on the site or on the Skoda information specifically on this, so thought I'd start a thread. Edit: the Columbus manual is in the sticky on this forum.

What type of memory card does the unit accept, and what is the maximum memory size of the cards it will accept? Edit: SD or MMC up to 2Mb says Skoda.

What type of music files does the software on the unit play? Most of my music is in FLAC, uncompressed versions of CDs, though I can use Foobar to convert files into MP3-type files. Edit: Manual says MP3 or WMA on SD card or DVD, but MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis or AAC on device connected via digital media in socket in glovebox.

Has anyone compared listening to the different levels of compression on MP3 using the Columbus with upgraded sound on decent recordings? Is the system good enough to hear the difference between 192 and 320kbps?

All help gratefully received :) .

there is loads of info on this subject as it has been discussed on depth so I am suprised you cant find anything.

max car size is 2gb. wont read SDHC.

use DVD's to transfer music as its more efficient - you can use dual layer DVDs.

you only get about 18GB of space for music so keep the bitrate small otherwise you will have a very small music collection !

I rip at 128 . i copared to 192 and could tell no difference - expecially when you are moving ans there is a bit of road noise/traffic noise etc. I have the upgraded sound system and its good - not compared it to the standard system,

So is columbus different from the current bolero, which reads also SDHC-cards ?

Yes, indeed.

VAG have compensated for the lack of HDD in the Bolero by adding SDHC support.

I'm still puzzled why they haven't done the same for the Columbus. After all, it is the flagship unit, so you'd expect SDHC support to be introduced. Either that, or a bigger HDD.

Bagpuss.
