a nice driving tip

forget the busy motorways, try the back roads. On our recent trip to Cheddar i did this on the return journey and today from the berkshire borders where i live to Redditch (brum way) and back again tonight we avoided the motorways and enjoyed some rather good back roads and the car enjoyed the journey more. Averaging 36.2mpg from an adventerous right foot. didnt actually take any longer, if anything probably a bit less and about 10 miles less by doing it this way. Great roads including the sharp zig zag bends up and down the steep hills at broadway  Certainly keeps you more awake and makes you think abit more than sitting on the motorway!!:D

Unless I need to cover a large distance in good time, I always use the lanes. Much more fun, involving and educational. The beautiful scenery is the icing on the cake, but that is often a bit of a blur :D

I do enjoy alternate back routes, as a pose to motorways, although my problem is once im there im so much more agrressive at driving. whereas the motor way i cruise control the large majority of time. and it can sometimes be so hard to overtake in bends, tom tom is great though if your not familiar with the route. Means you can plan a little further ahead if traffic i safe.

But yes i do agree with you. why have a fun car if its driven like limo

i find also with motorways before you realise it you are making a bit to much progress (notice the careful wording lol) plus you gonna get less trouble with making progress and gaining unnecessary points and pulls (if you get what i mean) this way too.

I used to go places for no real reason when I had the Scooby. I once went to Hawes (from Leeds) twice in one day, supposedly for coffee :D The next day we went to Grasmere for a bacon, mushroom and brie sandwich, and to drive Hardknott, Wrynose, Kirkstone and a few other pass's. I'd often do a 60 mile 'round trip just for a pint in Burnsall. I eventually had to sell it as I was just spending so much money on fuel, but my God it was fun :(

hat shape did grow on me in the end. was always a MK1 scooby fan though. love old school cars

I was never into the Classic's (as they're known). I've driven many of them, but find them too raw. The New-Age cars are more refined and smoother, and thus ultimately faster even though they don't feel it. The new Hatchback takes this evolution further, although it's a pig to look at.

its the feel faster rawness i love. My car is by far quick enough but it soesnt feel like its going fast unles you are racing someone

I'm the other way, I drive very smoothly and like my car to reflect that, even at quite extreme speeds. When I was running the West Yorks Impreza Owners Club, there were very few could keep up, no matter what power they had or which model, yet my passengers always felt calm, my tires lasted ages, my brakes too, and nothing ever broke on my car. The 'hooligan' drivers in the club who couldn't keep up were forever fixing stuff as their aggressive driving and car set up simply wasn't as fast.

I think we've hijacked this thread :D
