Park assist-Needed or not?

Featured Replies

Hi guys i am about to order a 1.4 tsi superb, elegance and i am curious about the park assist system. It is not included in the Cyprus elegance version and it costs about 200 euro to add it to the car. I 've seen videos in the internet about it but wanted to hear from first hand if it is usable in fast driving conditions and practicable in real life.

Thanks,

Marios

I have had my car for two months now, and I haven`t used that thing at all. :D

My thoughts;

1. It is the ultimate show off toy, at company meetings you will need to make time to demonstrate it to your colleagues!

2. It really does work and is very useful. I am a good parker but the Superb is a big car and Park Assist makes parking a doddle. It has got me into spaces I would normally consider a little on the small size so would have driven on by.

3. In the UK it is priced only £70 more than the front sensors and includes front sensors. I would say the front sensors are IMHO a must.

Not sure what you mean about fast driving conditions, the only slowing factor is that the car must be stationary for 1 second on engaging reverse and you can not exceed a certain speed during the manouvre. I have used the system in busy town centres and have not been pressured time wise.

So in conclusion, get it!

With "Fast driving conditions" i mean town center driving :).

The car comes with front and rear parking sensors. So i have to consider it twice before adding the park assist on the car because when having front and rear sensors makes it very easy to park.

well it is not expensive toy to have... but that what it is...a toy...

waste of money = especially at €200. Front and rear sensors are essential but I have not used park assist in 2 months !

How are front sensors essential? Surely you can see where the front of the car is?

Boy, there are some real puritans on here!

Every time I use Park Assist it brings a smile to my face (and to those of my passengers).

Makes me wonder why Skoda don't offer a puritan spec, it could have keep fit windows (or better still sealed up windows) no air con and have the power assistance removed from the steering.

Then the puritans could be happy with their misery.

Rant over.

I love my gadgets, and am all for them in cars.

Just I've never seen the point of front parking sensors, I've never been in a place and thought "Hmm, I wish I knew how far away that car is front, I can't see it!".

Rear sensors are a good idea, but bizarrely enough I can park big cars but not little ones!

The absence of rear sensors on the Octavia didn't bother me, but I actually was looking for retro-fit ones for my little Lupo!

Babs, it's actually pretty difficult to see where the front of the car is, but I'm sure you'd learn where it is after a while.

Simbo. I specced it as a toy and defence mechanism against Skoda jibes (sure shuts them up!) but I am finding myself genuinely using it day to day.

I see parking sensors and Park Assist a bit like TV remote controls, before they came along they were difficult to see the point of. Once you've used one on the other hand you don't want to go back.

I drove for years with no sensors (front or rear) let alone park assist and got on just fine. Now I'm spoiled by my car to the extent when I jump in my wife's 500 I have to really concentrate hard to not get things wrong!

Overall, I agree, it is a toy. But what's wrong with that?

i think to order a high spec car without front sensors is silly - anyone buying a used elegance in teh future will surely expect front sensors. I took the same view with park assist as that already mentioned - not that useful but for 0.3% of the purchase price ...who cares !!! might help to sell it .

I agree with that, but obviously some don't as a couple of weeks ago my local dealer had two Elegance's in the yard just delivered, neither with front sensors.

I wanted front sensors as some times park very close to a wall and always think I am going to scrape the wing (the extra £70 for park assist is a no brainer!), Never banged the front of the car yet though but have on my previous two cars bumped in to those metal posts! seen quiet a few cars with bangs on the back (due to new cars having a high boot line) so rear sensors these days are a must!

Front sensors are a must, in my opinion. In a smaller car, with a shorter bonnet, it's pretty easy to see where the front is in relation to stationary objects. In the Superb, it's not so easy.

I'm sure you'd work it out with a bit of practice, but front sensors mean you don't have to. I bought the car because I wanted something to take the sting out of the vast amount of driving I do, and front sensors just make it all little bit easier.

As for park assist, it's a gimmick, but a very impressive one. It was worth the extra £70 just to see the look on my 6 year old's face the first time I used it :D

If I was ordering now, I'd still go for it, as it has come in useful.

Bagpuss.

On an Elegance front sensors are a must as it is the top of the range! would not even consider one without, different for the S & SE.

I don't have front sensors or park assist on my SE.

Have to say that if I was prepared to pay the extra for the fronts I'd go for the park assist as its not a lot extra. That said I didn't and wouldn't pay extra on an SE- completely agree that fronts are nice to have but they are a nice to have, a bit of caution whilst you get used to the size of the car can't be a bad thing.

It takes a little getting used to coming from a much shorter car to judge space size and park but rears are all thats really required - I don't think I'd buy a car without rear sensors unless its a really small city car or super-mini having had them for the last 3 years.

If your going for the Elegance there is an argument to have park assist added but I really don't think you'll see the money back at resale so the question is do you want the coolest toy on the top spec car it at the price offered.

I think the superb doesn't even park that way with the park assist. I believe it is used only for parallel parking.

Can someone throw some light on this?

:D i knew that you were joking . But i liked the idea of vertical park assist on the lexus (even if they didn't manage to operate it). That was really funny -but frustrating for them-.

did they steal this from skoda ? or the other way round ?

  • 2 weeks later...

Ask for demo at a dealer, I did and was so impresssed I order it! will save your alloys on the kerbs aswell, unless you never park on the road then it would be a waste of money I supose.
