The usual alternator problem?

Featured Replies

No spark from the HT lead no. Looks like it could be just the coil/amp ?

Anyone got a spare I could test it with?!

Whereabouts are you based? Only other thing I can think is maybe engine earthing strap? (Edit: Although I guess that would kill the starter too...)

have you tried it with one of the other leads?

Yeh, even tried it with a lead off the MR2...

I'm in Derby

It's not that unusual for the starter to have its own earth lead; it does draw that much power.

the starter is earth via the gearbox casing ken, the big lead on the starter is a live and it goes straight to the battery

Ok; just a thought because it is model-specific enough that I've seen separate earth braids to block and starter.

the gearbox has it's own earth strap which curiously also earths the rest of the chassis via another cable, it's an odd arrangement tbh, the main earth from the battery only goes to the engine and the and nowhere else

Right, been testing the coil today.

How close does it have to be to the specifications given in Haynes? Will a slight deviation matter ?

It will deviate based on temperature and also some multimeters will give slightly different readings. So I'd say if you're close enough it should be fine. I guess it's still possible a coil measures ok in terms of resistance but doesn't work though.

Well, coils are more likely to "break down" when they (and by implication the engines) are hot.

Well, finally got to the breakers yard yesterday (its closes at 4pm which is a real pain for after work).

Had a dig around, all of the felicia's had all the ignition stuff missing (common problem then!). And tucked away in the corner was a favorit, same engine, coil looked different but I gave it a go.

IT LIVES!!

It's so awesome to have my Felly back :)

Thanks for all your help, its good to bounce ideas off eachother!
