cambelt change

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm new to this cambelt changing requirement, never having had a car with one before.

I have been quoted £322 inc VAT by the Skoda authorised garage. Is this about right for an 1.9TDI (54 reg, 59,000 miles)?

I asked about the water pump and they said they check it at the same time but don't automatically change it as they have never had one go (whatever that means).

I am currently waiting on a quote from my local garage to see if there is much difference, I have used them for various jobs over the years and they have always been reliable. Also I have seen mention in the forums of a kit for doing this job and was wondering what it consists of.

Hope this is not covering too much old ground.

My 2.0TDI cambelt was changed last week at 80,000 miles, all in it came to £347, this covered the labour, the toothed belt and the belt tensioner. The water pump wasn't done as I was told it isn't necessary. I would imagine they check for excess play in the pump bearings and for leaks around the seals while the innards are exposed and I would expect them to advise accordingly if it needs changing.

Other VAG engines (1.8T 20v) are notorious for losing water pumps, the plastic impeller goes and can cost a cylinder head if not worse.

A friend of mine was very lucky when his TT lunched its water pump and the temp gauge went off the end of the red  The cambelt was done the week before by a non Audi/VAG outfit.

I don't think the TDIs have such a problem. My old 1.9TDI went past 120k without any water pump issues.

All in my personal experience you understand.

I;ve been quoted today for cambelt change, and 50k service £330 all in.

This is at Rainworth skoda in mansfield, nottinghamshire, they are offering 15%off parts and labour on the cambelt at the mo, (ends end of march)

Thats not too shabby.

My last service was a major with new discs and pads, £650 all in :P

But I was glad to have the main dealer stamps in the book when the turbo went bang.

I know its no longer a warranty requirement but even so......................

SWMBO had the cambelt done last month on her VW Golf 2.0 TDi at Martins of Farnham (VW dealer) for £299 all in (parts, labour and VAT)

I have been quoted £150 quid by respectable independant.

I had mine done at 80k why you getting it done at 60?

Clutch/flywheel are going now :/

Not all in surely?

Genuine parts cost over £70, not leaving a lot of labour..lol

The recommended interval for the cambelt change is 60k or 4 years, whichever is the sooner. Mine qualifies on both counts. This is the information I was given by three main agents so I assume it is correct?

Your dealership may "never have seen a waterpump go", but there's an independant garage in Kent that is amazed by my very long range (about 600 miles from the car) diagnostics skills when I correctly diagnosed impeller breakup on a mate's TDi110 as the cause of his overheating!
