Auto Lights

Featured Replies

I have the headlights switch on auto, however during the recent bright sunny weather I have noticed that the lights have been on a lot of the time. This has been mid afternoon in very bright sunlight, not driving in shadows etc. Darker evenings and night time the lights come on as expected.

Have other people noticed this or is my light sensor on the windscreen playing up? I did have a replacement windscreen fitted a few weeks ago. The light and rain sensors ar epart of the screen.

Could be a sensor issue - mine behave very well except sometimes in part shadow they stay on. I am sure there is some hysteresis in the on/off points as once it has come on it takes quite an increase in light levels before it goes off (and vice versa)

I think sensors are in back of mirror where it "mounts" on screen - maybe windscreen fitter did something wrong, if they worked Ok before ?

Been very happy with the behaviour of mine except during a foggy morning last week when they didn't come on. I have the DRLs on anyway so doesn't really make much difference.

I thought that the light sensor was centrally-mounted on the top of the dashboard, so what does that one do?

Ray

The sensor is the large unit on the mirror mounting fixed to the windscreen also houses the rain sensor.

When I had a new windscreen fitted to my previous Superb, most of the unit was obscured by adhesive and the rain sensor never worked properly again.

I have read somewhere that the sensor in the top of the dash is supposed to be a sun sensor and is incorporated in the air con system.

That is interesting; I complained to the dealer the other day because my lights did not come on when I drove in a fog last week. Oncoming drivers were flashing their lights at me untill I put mine on manually.

I was told to "monitor" them, which is not particularly helpful.

Perhaps the sensors do not respond to fog which is opaque rather than black? I have checked them at dusk since then and they seem OK.

Agreed, as posted above it was fog not light mist. Lights certainly needed to be on.

Am I the only one on here with the DRLs enabled?

Dan

Fog wouldnt turn them on, as the light reflection would indicate daylight and turn/keep them off.

mine come on in bright sunshine. also come on when its a bit overcast. i think they are too sensitive. annoying because the leaving home/coming home lights dont work unless the swith is in the auto position which is daft. they shoudl work all the time regardless of position of lights swtich

Just a quick question you havent been driving over 75mph as iirc they come on over that speed anyway automatically when in auto mode. You didnt say in your post where you had been driving i.e motorway or urban

Other than that the sensor prob just needs adjusting. Think you can do it with VCDS but not entirely sure. If your not happy take it back to delears and tell them to fix it

I think it's 85mph (140 km/h)

You dont need home lights if your lights are off. If they're off/not on auto, then why would you need them?

Mine dont come on unless in auto. You could overide this in VAGcom, but why would you want to?

Mine dont :(

Knew it had a 5 in it :D:P

You need to maintain this speed (or higher) for a few seconds (with switch set to auto) before they come on...erm, not that I'd have experience of this officer!

if you are driving in daylight and the lights are on AUTO and they come on when you dont need them (ie bright sunlight as mentioned) then you turn the switch to off. You arrive home and park up . You then go to get in the car later, after dark, and the leaving home lights dont come on as the switch is in the OFF position. On a previous car coming home / leaving home lights worked regardless of switch position. This should be the case with the dark sensor determining whether they come on or not

I have certainly found the sensor to be set too sensitive generally (i.e. lights switch on in Auto position even when conditions are quite bright). The dealer advises this cannot be adjusted so one has to accept the setting or simply control manually.

It doesn't cause a problem generally particularly as I tend to use DRL during the winter period but now when this function is disabled having the lights switch on when it appears to be a reasonably bright morning does seem unnecessary.
