Salvage Yard Rant

Featured Replies

Ok i will try to contain my anger but I may just boil over....

Back at the beginning of February i managed to locate in a local scrap yard an ex-plod Octy with its 5 Spiders attached but not fully inact prompting:

http://briskoda.net/fabia-i/octy-1-wheels-worth-waste-time-money/134904/.

At the time i decided i didnt have the money to buy 3 wheels then new tyres or the inclination to bother with sourcing a single wheel to complete the set.

However a couple of good months at work and seeing a few singles pop up on eBay i decided to take the plunge.

Went over on 07/03 and put my name on them and was promised within a week they'd be off and they'd let me know - which they did on 12/03 they even took the least damaged wheel off to make the set up to 4 - however i was away that weekend so couldn't pick them up but didn't see what difference it would make as who else is crazy enough to buy 3 wheels!

Called them last Wednesday to confirm they were still there before commiting to buying the eBay one:

"no sir. sorry no sign of any alloys here. Although Stu was sorting that he may have put them somewhere safe call back tomorrow when he's back in"

which I did and "yeah they are here I loaded them on the van myself"

"Thanks very much i'll collect on Saturday morning"

Following this i commited to buying the single off eBay and got very excited :)

Arrive at the breakers to collect on Saturday morning - "yes i'll just go get them" - 20 minutes later i'm wondering whats happened - after half an hour they cannot be found and are not where they were left - 45 minutes i'm told that they must hav ebeen put somewhere safe by someone who's not in but we'll keep searching and callonce they turn up.

Rest of Saturday - No call

Sunday - they are shut so definitely no call but i cannot back out of the eBay deal so pay £50 and collect my single wheel.

Called the yard a minute ago for an update and they still haven't surfaced and don't understand "how 4 17" wheels with tyres can just vanish and the only reasonable explanation is that someone has had them away" (or my most likely explaination that they'd sold them to someone else)

Hacked off doesn't quite cut it!!

Do i demand they buy the 4th wheel off me at cost hence reinbursing me or do i go properly mental and demand some form of compensation?

I'm not holding my breath that either approach will get results!

So if you see 3 or 4 Spiders for sale in the Gloucester Area especially if one is damaged as i, and probably the breakers, would like to have a few words with the vender!!!

Alternatively if anyone needs a replacement or an alloy spare - **clicky clicky** http://briskoda.net/items-sale/octavia-vrs-17-spider-x1/141425/#post1648878

From my experience with scrappys, they aint going to give you nothing, no compo, and certainly not buy the 1 wheel you have,

That's the thing with them. I won't part with anything or commit until I have personally got the items in my hands. How come they didn't just let you go up with a wrench and get them off? Is it one of those places where they have to do everything themselves? Personally, if I can't get my hands dirty retrieving what I want, then that's half the pleasure for me of getting something off a salvage car. :o

i thought if i go mental enough they might just cave in and throw summin at me just to get rid of me!!

Although should Briskoda find it a new home and i break even i'll probably go quietly!

Tight eBay deadlines kind of forced my hand as winning and collecting from Bristol is a damn sight closer and easier than winning and collecing/paying for collection from Essex or Scotland

I was happy to get the wheels off myself and take them away on my first visit but they wouldn't leave me in the yard "where there wasn't room to work properly." blah blah blah :(

I think that "summin" is more likely to be a right hook than a wodge of cash.

Although I've heard hospital food is much better than it used to be

So you said "I would like those", but didn't give them a deposit or anything, and now you're hacked off because someone else came in and offered to give them money then and there?

they do seem quite amicable and theres been no sign of a Rottweiler so far!

I did offer a deposit and was told it wasn't required.

I was told they wouldn't be on display so no-one else would see them and be able to buy them.

I was told they were still there 2 weeks after I asked for them and a day and a half before i went to collect.

I may have been told a pack of lies

But was witness to and eventually part of the hunt for them and they all seemed genuinely confuse about where they'd gone and during the phone call this morning I did ask if there was any record of them being sold and was told "no"

who knows?!

it is very disappointing though :(

Ah, I wouldn't even entertain the idea of using such a place. I have climbed up on to 1 car, to monkey across and get to a fabia that was on top of another car in the place not far from me. :D If it's not a challenge to get to, it's not fun.

PS: I expect the yard had a huge disclaimer somewhere about injuries to people in the yard, but I didn't care. :)

It's far more fun when the bit your after is in the car that's rocking gently backward and forward on top of two (normally smaller) cars :D

I remember trying to extract a rear view mirror from a car at the top which was rather bent and I couldn't open the doors so I was perched in a car on the next pile leaning in through the window to get it.

I think being two cars + 1 car up is a bit more dodgy. At least if I slipped I only had about 5 to 6 feet to fall, not nearly 10.

they're running a business and money is money so they could have been sold, but it sounds like some ****'s knicked em - our "neighbour" has had stuff go walkies during the night on more than one occasion. As for some sort of compensation, the very best you can hope for is to be politely told where to go :D

I didn't think H&S let them have customers in the yard proper these days, let alone have them clambering up and over cars?
