Shortening Roomster aerial

Featured Replies

A previous thread discussed my doubts as to whether a Roomster "3" with its rear mounted aerial would get under my garage door. Sadly I was right, it doesn't, but we were pretty convinced that this would be the case as a result of members doing measurements for me.

The garage "found the solution", they laid the rod down a bit further and tightened it up. They were right, except when you want to open the rear door! Once grit adheres to the whip, some nice scratches will appear where it chafes.

I have heaved and pulled, the roof rippled, but it will not come out of its mount. I'm sure that I read somewhere on the Forum that a cold frosty night is the best time to try it!

Has anyone shortened the whip part of the aerial and if so, did it affect reception to any degree? I have a large pair of tree loppers and am considering chopping the required amount off, but don't want to go ahead if it will cause problems. I can see the the centre material of the rod is probably coiled steel and there is a wire element coiled arounf the outside. If I can also get the cap off the tip and put it back over the shortened road with a drop of super glue, maybe that's the quickest way out of the problem.

You know your sat nav will start talking in a falsetto voice if you do the Bobbette chop? :)

Soz, I'm genuinely interested in the answer because when I take delivery of my 3 this week, with the rear mounted aerial, I'm going to be in the same boat.

I have my trusty S2000 aerial fitted to the vRoomster, the OEM one is easy enough to get out, just unscrew it, gentle side to side "waggeling" and then twist it out. I have done it on both my previous octy's and on the vRoomster.

Thanks for that, I'm just warming up again with a cuppa and I'll try your method. I got the impression that it was raw brute strengh, but when I saw the roof rippling I gave up! It needs 4" off, which almost halves its length. The amazing thing is that I had a friend with a Scout, and a Roomster "2" both with front mounts and they fitted perfectly! Just shows the difference in height of front versus rear! I'll let you know if I get it out without breaking anything!

Probably a stupid idea but how about a piece or string/cord attached to the top of the whip with the other end attached to the tailgate (super glue?) and pulled tight enough to clear the garage, but when you open the tailgate the string goes slack and the whip returns to it's normal position?

I have my best ideas at the beginning of the week!:):thumbdwn:

Has anyone else managed to 'waggle' an aerial out of a Roomster?

I've got the same problem as the OP but not as bad. I can get it in the garage if I tighten it tilted back a tad - however AM reception is appalling when I do that. I tried unscrewing it and waggling it but it wasn't going anywhere, and to be honest, I got the 'fear' that I was going to do some damage. Do I wait for a cold and frosty night?

And lo, it was popped off!

I got up this morning and had another go, unscrew, waggle and then it seemed to not be unscrewing any more, it was just spinning in the mount freely, so I give a little pull and off it popped.

The secret is the little bit at the very end, that's the anti-theft bit

My aerial is now removed and an S2000 ordered. I eased it to start with by using a few drops of very cold water which had been an hour in the freezer. I wiggled it around as described and then gave it a quick tug and out she popped! Just an average pull is required, I was taken by surprise when it came out so easily and I staggered backwards and was stopped by the crossbeam on the garage door! No damage to the door or car!

Changed mine... :)

Can I ask, what are the three doodahs on the right for?

And I thought that I solved the aerial problem when I finally popped it out!

The S2000 "genuine Honda" rubber duck arrived this morning. I was a bit surprised how short the threaded bit protuted from the aerial, only a couple of turns in my case. I firstly that the the threaded bit was a size lower than the Skoda, but that doesn't appear to be the case. I've been out to talk with someone in the trade and we tried trimming the base of the S2000, but finished up just about secured on one thread. We think perhaps the first thread might have got opened up a bit trying to remove the element, so I have finished up with an aerial exactly the same as original, but only 28cm long. That had a longer connecting thread so has tightened up fully and I can now enter the garage with 2mm to spare. I can receive MW and LW, perhaps a bit scratchy sometimes, but I'm going to leave well alone now!

Glad you have it sorted

If you put AN7601 into a search engine you will find at least 2 different suppliers who sell various lengths of the OEM whip which appears on the Roomster as original equipment. My 28cm version performs perfectly on VHF and similar to the full length version on MW (i.e. fading in built up areas). In my case the problem was the rear mount on the Roomster 3 was tangling with the garage door, it now goes in with 1cm to spare!
