Whistling Turbo???

Featured Replies

:confused:Hi folks,

I drive a Skoda Superb Elegance 1.9tdi (130) has been mapped now puts out around 170 aprox. Any way last week I was driving with the radio down low Inoticed the engine making a whistling sound in low gears at slow speeds ( never done this before) I think it is the Turbo??

Although the car hasnt lost any power I am now reluctant to sink the boot just incase I blow my turbo. Has any one had to replace a turbo and does any one know is this a tell tale sign of a turbo in the last legs??

Any info anyone can give would be very welcome

Thanks veedubdan

Can you hear the whistling under acceleration?

Where is the whistling coming from exactly in the engine bay, have you investigated?

Reason why I ask is because I thought my Turbo was going as it was whistling and the noise was coming from the Turbo area but I had not loss in power at all, turns out that one of the intercooler pipes had come away and it was just air escaping causing it to whistle..........

hi baker21,

thanks for ur response. I cannot hear the whistle sound wen I accerate hard or above speeds of approx 40mph. only seems to be there wen driving slow with rpm of between 1800 and 2500.

I will get a look at the intercooler pipes tomarrow wen im off work and let you know how i get on.

cheers

Fair enough mate, worth a look maybe to check that everything is where it should be an clipped on as these pipes and fixings do have a habit of coming undone over time and mileage.............;)

Also worth remembering that NOT using the turbo may cause the vanes to start sticking, so I just used to make sure the engine was warmed up and give it some beans every once in a while ;)

Driving it 'gently' all the time actually can cause more trouble than it is worth IMHO

Could be the EGR opening and closing. That happens at about that rev range too, I think...

Fair point, as the engine will be under very light load :)
