Xbox 360 Mods

Right, well due to RRoD and no warranty (2nd hand to me, now just over 3 years old) I've decided to pimp my xbox.

So far I've ordered a RRoD repair kit, Talismoon Whisper fans, and a case opening kit.

I've seen a clear perspex window that I would like to fit, but this is where I come unstuck.

What would I use to cut the case to fit the window? I've done a bit of googling, and there seems to be some sort of hand tool for £8, but I'm not sure about it as it doesn't look like it could cut through paper, let alone a relatively thick plastic case.

Any ideas? I assume something similar is around for modding PC cases, and I can't afford a dremmel to use once!

I would make sure the RROD repair kit actually does its job before doing anything. You may well find its only short term, after I did mine following an online guide it worked for a few more weeks then packed up for good.

Having now done some furious googling on the RRoD, it transpires I don't have a proper RRoD. It an overheating issue - which is occurring despite more than adequate ventilation.

So - I'm not going to bother fitting the RRoD fix kit when it arrives, I'll try it with the new, supposedly better fans.

[EDIT] Xbox turns on fine now, and lasts for various amounts of time - lasting between 2hrs and 9hrs!! Must be a heat issue somewhere... I even got more ventilation to the power brick now!!

It could be just the 2 fans on the back of the unit not working properly. If you decide to take it apart. power it up whilst its apart and make sure they are both spinning.

I was thinking about doing a case mod on my console (big kid:D).

I've seen some really nice stuff out there and I can't find the links at the mo.

Something like this might get you started without the need for cutting XBOX 360 X-RAY TRANSLUCENT CLEAR WINDOW CASE MOD XRAY on eBay, also, Xbox 360, Accessories, Video Games (end time 30-Mar-09 00:00:00 BST)

Or this :D360 - XCM -CLEAR Full Case Special CUSTOM BLUE HALO LED on eBay, also, Xbox 360, Consoles Systems, Video Games (end time 25-Apr-09 18:10:01 BST)

Forget the fans, water cooling is the way to go:D

Just as a side note, MS repaired mine FOC after the same thing 2 weeks ago, mine is out of warranty and just over 3 years old. It was collected, repaired, returned in just over a week. Mine had been faultless before, never a glitch and that's not bad service for something that is clearly out of warranty imho

I had equally good service from them :)

RRoD is usually where the heatsink is no longer held tightly against the various CPU/GPU components. Fans can also cause this, but less often is this the case.

Might be worth trying MS first as you may get something from what others have said.

If you need any help - Please do give me a shout.

I'm located in Swindon and I'm more than happy to do the work to your box for you. I have just got another 360 and I'm about to mod it for a friend.

I will do a build thread if your interested with parts used ect if that would help?

If you do need any help please feel free to send me a PM.

All the best,

Rob

Cheers for the offer Robshaw! The only part I'm a bit confused on is the actual cutting of the case. Without a dremeI, I can't find any information on how to do it!

I fitted the talismoon fans today, and I've had it on for an hour. It's definatly running cooler already, the hot air coming out the back is now a lot cooler and the temperature of the console to the touch is about half of what is was before (using the scientific method of touching it in several places as I did with the old fans!).

I might not bother fitting the RRoD kit now the temperature is so much lower!
