Anyone elses 1.9TDI PD105 Smoke like a gud en?

Hi all, ever since getting the car. I've have an issue where revving anywhere near 3000rpm causes plumes of smoke, more noticable whilst infront of cars at night.

By 3500rpm i can fill the entire air behind me, but comparing to other peoples mpg figures I dont achieve anywhere near what everyone else experiences.

34mpg around dardling around town, and on a run with and a mix of town driving i get about 45mpg, ive replaced the coolant temp sensor...with no change to either smog or mpg figures.

The inlet manifold isn't restricted by residue, and the EGR was thoroughly cleaned some 4000miles since.

Maybe its a lamda or MAF sensor thats starting to become weak?

Also the car has almost covered 129k.

So im now wondering if anyone else suffers the same sort of symptoms, or if any others out there with a more in depth knowledge can shed some light?

If it helps, my 2.0 PD has been like that since new. Its especially bad if after dawling around in traffic. Boot the accelerator in 3rd and boof smokescreen. I think diesel soot looks especially bad with headlights shining through - looks a lot worse than it is. For the record mine has only done 15k and had no DPF to catch this stuff.

I've had 5 Skoda diesels and they've all done that in varying degrees from 8k miles up to 99k. The first time I saw it (on my 1st diesel) I thought the engine had blown. I've also seen this from Beamers, Toyotas and Nissans (and other VAG cars) and my Peugot (:eek:) 2.5 motorhome does it as well......... Hope this helps. Why not ask your friendly local dealer?

My 1.9TDi has done this from new and its now 3.5 years old and done 90K miles.

I used Total Excellium diesel for a few months and there was hardly any smoke with that. At the time it was usually 3p per litre dearer than the ordinairy diesel but the small improvement in mpg covered the extra cost according to my calculations. I stopped using it when the difference went up to 4p per litre.

You might have a grotty MAF sensor, might be worth giving it a clean.

Silly question - hows the air filter? :rolleyes:

It hasn't got one of resistor type tuning boxes has it? they make a PD smoke like hell.

No tuning boxes as far as im aware...its not entirely that quick so wouldn't think so, and it had a service at 125k when the turbo went pop.

I think i've cleaned the MAF sensor, although not entirely certain.

Mine will do this whilst driving in town.I notice that my MPG goes down slightly so i take the car for some exercise and the MPG soons goes back up again and it all smooths out after too.

As said above its well worth checking your MAF and also the Air Filter.

Airfilter only has 4k on it, its had two in 12k haha.

Thought about replacing the MAF and Lambda Sensor.

Pretty sure it will be MAF related as i had this problem on my MK1.they replaced the MAF under warranty as had only done 22K at the time and the MPG went back up and the smoke was far less.

Taking it steady, it doesnt tend to smoke that much.

Pulls pretty well too, just when you open the throttle up you see a haze about 3000-3250rpm and then plumes it by 3500-3750rpm.

Will probably look into buying a new one in the future, just dont want to buy one and find out it doesn't sort it.

I was only achieving 360miles to a tank before the turbo went pop, once it was replaced im achieving somewhere around 400-450miles depending on how much driving im doing. The most i've achieved is 450 though with a couple hundred of them motorway cruising.

So rarely ever rev mine past 2500 but when I do, lots of lovely smoke, especially on the Fabia Vrs! Leaves the Citroen Saxo brigade coughing and spluttering in my wake!

I've got an octy 2 PD105 with 135k on and only get a wisp changing gear, but my superb PD100 literally pours the smog out!! could be the difference between urban and motorway use?

It's nothing, it's a diesel at the end of the day, they all smoke, you tend to notice it in other people's headlights. They are not as bad as Mundano TDCi's by any amount.

the diesel I had before I got my octavia punto used to do that - just this amazing wall of smoke, especially when you booted it (as much as you boot a v reg 1.7 TD punto :D - although when it was new I did manage to surprise a few saxo and even the odd BMW/Audi driver pulling away)

The fuel temp sensor in mine went recently, and I noticed that my mpg dropped to the low 30's around town and somewhere in the 40s on a mixed run (mway/a road / town drive) and that I was also smoking (and very smelly) Replaced the sensor and getting 50.1 mpg on my run to work (mixed town and 5 miles of A road) and 62-64 on a motorway jaunt (70-80 cruise), no smoke either - possibly that if not the MAF etc?

Mines pouring smoke, but it looks as though the chirping noise i've been experiencing is my intake manifold is leaking.

Im generating a fair amount of resonating noise and smog :(

Never had any noticible smoke from my PD105 or PD170. I did from my Renault 1.9 DCI 120 though, especially with the tuning box on.

All diesels tend to over fuel as the throttle is opened wide, and with a turbo spooling up at the same time, lots of smoke. Nothing to worry about. Do it 3 or 4 times in a row and it will clear. 'Til the next time.

Smoking is normal, although it's usually only with hard acceleration, it shouldn't do it when travelling at constant speed at 3000 rpm, only when coming out of r/a or onslips

Usually get 450 - 500 miles and 550 if a long motorway trip at 65-70mph before it pings to tell me to fill up. Consumption does improve hugely by staying within the speed limits on motorway.

I forgot to mention i found out the car had been remapped before i got it. So no wonder it was smoking badly!

It must have been really set on the edge of the max injector duty, for it to generate the power it did at Awesomes RR day.

Just how much power did it output? I'm wondering what's a safe power to run the engine to before there's a danger of killing it. 145 hp seems to be common enough for PD 105 remaps...

Pending insewerance company approval I'll hopefully get mine done soon with RR before and after. I haven't noticed any smoke from my car yet and I've looked for it. When a friend of mine was driving after me he did say he saw some smoke alright, but it had dispersed before it got to back window height. Plenty of remaps claim less smoke anyway though. All it needs to do is not smoke under no load at the red line to pass the Irish MOT apparently...

It pulled 151bhp at the wheels and 160bhp at the clutch, somehow i thought there would have been a more substantial amount lost across the gearbox.

Mine use to smoke like a trooper at full whack, I think the injectors wern't capable of atomising the fuel at full chat under the duty they was running.

Mine never use to smoke sat on the redline for an MOT, but it use to bellow it out whilst underload.

Unburnt diesel does increase exhaust gas temperatures, so its not a good idea to be pushing loads of unburnt fuel through the turbo/exhaust.
