How many keys

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

How many keys should the mk1 come with? I have the following:

1 Transponder key

2 A standard key

3 A plastic mock up

I am using the transponder key at the moment however was hoping to have 2 of these. Not too sure what the other 2 are for.

Does the comfort model have an alarm?

1 Transponder key - I assume you mean the 3 button remote/key?

2 A standard key - with a white spanner symbol? this service / valet key will not open the glove box (or boot IIRC) so valuables can be left in the car whilst being serviced etc

3 A plastic mock up

They come with 4 keys:

2x 3 button remote/key

1x service key

1x plastic emergency key

They all have transponders in them (without a transponder the car will not start, the transponder is for the immobilizer)

Yes the Comfort does have an alarm.

Thanks for the detailed response. Any ideas to how i can arrange for a cheap 3 button key?

Just checked out ebay and the following are widely sold:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-MK4-BORA-PASSAT-SKODA-SEAT-KEY-FOB_W0QQitemZ220391500518QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item220391500518&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Is the programming and cutting expensive and will only skoda do this?

The first thing you need is the SKC do you have a tag like the one in the photo with any of your keys?

If you don't then you need someone with VAG Tacho to retrieve the SKC, once you have the code you then need an new and un programmed transponder (this is more than just a blank key - as most on eBay sell!) the transponders are fairly cheap from Hickleys or better still one like this one on eBay - it's a new transponder & blank key blade.

To get the key cut will cost you about £5 from any locksmiths / key cutter with a LASER cutter.

Next you need someone with VCDS to program the new transponder to your immobilizer.

Finally scour eBay for a remote section of the key (the part with the three buttons) - but make sure you get one with the identical part No. & frequency MHZ of your current remote.

This is where you need to look

Taken from ukmkivs.net (although this process is on a Golf, it is the same on others in the VAG range)

Total cost:

New transponder & blade (eBay link) £12

Key cutting approx £5

VCDS programming approx £20

If you need the SKC retrieving approx £20

eBay remote £10 (or less)

Or the dealer will charge approx £160 to supply a (new) remote / key programmed to your car.

I did all the above for SHMBO's MK5 Golf and it cost less than £50, but i have VCDS and i got the SKC free, but the newer transponders are much dearer (£15 compared with £4 for the Superb). So big savings can be had over the dealer option.

Personally in your situation i would not bother as you have a spare key anyway (the service / valet key) but we only had the one key the car came with, but at the end of the day it's your choice and your money.
