Apologies of this is the incorrect forum for this query. I have two problems with my 2004 Skoda Fabia. The first is an engine management light which has persisted in spite of the fact that the independent garage where I took it changed the lambda sensors. There is also (a possibly related?) leak coming from the engine area. I have checked the oil level and that's fine, but it looks like it might be coming from the portion of the engine you can see at the front of this photo (the plastic section with the numbers on it). As I am already over £200 down trying to get to the bottom of the first of these problems, I'd be grateful for any guidance you could give to someone who knows nothing about car engines.

that plastic thing is the screw cover for the oil filter housing , so oil could be leaking from that if the seal hasn't been changed on a recent service or it was damaged when fitted

give it a good wipe off , then re-check it after a day or so

That's the alternator below there, so probably not too good.

iirc a new oil filter comes with a replacement o-ring which should be changed at the same time, maybe whoever changed it didn't bother to do the o-ring

Or maybe its old oil from when it was changed.
