Tailgate not locking?

Featured Replies

The tailgate on my TDI estate (98) has stopped locking but it still works the central locking. It has intermittently stopped working in the last year and with some fiddling and banging of passenger doors it resolved but has now been defunct for a couple of months. The lock on the drivers door has never worked since I got it and the only way to lock the car had been from the tailgate.

I'd ideally like to get everything working again any thoughts? The drivers lock just turns in the barrel and doesn't appear connected to anything, no click etc. The tailgate lock turns and clicks but now only triggers the passenger doors and not the "clunk" I got before.

Cheers

I've followed some of the posts about the solenoid and checked that out. I shorted the 2 pins on the solenoid from another 12v source and it seems to work? When on the car though it doesn't. When turning the key there doesn't appear to be a current through the connecting wires either. Does anyone have any ideas?

If there is no power to the solenoid, perhaps one of the wires has broken where it is flexed between the roof and the tailgate?

I've got numerous locking problems, similar to this is the boot lock will unlock ok, fires the solenoid etc, but when turning it to lock it is stiff, ie it is pulling the solenoid out rather than the microswitch firing it out, it therefore doesnt fire the central locking.

I have tested the microswitch, that is ok, if I remove the harness from the microswitch, it has 3 wires, Basically shorting together the central and 1 other as should be done when locking the boot doesnt work - it is a white blue wire that on the wiring diagram goes straight to the convienience unit.

Has anyone come accross this ?

I cant see a problem with the connector onto the conv unit, its pretty well tucked out of harms way.

Possible break in the white blue cable somewhere along the way ?

It's strange but not sure if it's due to the warmer weather this week but the tailgate's started locking again. If it doesn't then a slammed shutting does the trick!
