Turbo Help on my Octavia vRS Mk1

I need some help. About three days ago as I was accelerating onto the motorway my turbo went from a whistle to a very loud 'hissing' noise once the car reached about 4000 revs. Scared the life out of me at the time. I eased off and drove it a little more grannyish but everytime the revs went higher the loud hiss would come back. On my way into work yesterday the engine management light came on and the EPC light and I lost power. After leaving it a while I got it to a small local garage. I left it with him whilst at work and was very pleased when he informed me it was just a hose and come lose from the turbo and it had been fixed for £20! I drove it home (about a mile) and it was fine. Later that night I went to go out and as I drove down the road the Engine management light and EPC light came on again and the car started losing power. I got it back home and called my local Skoda garage (Motorline Dartford) and spoke to a technition, he said it could be something simple. Knowing full well what garages are like I asked him what the worst case scenario could be and was told it may need a new turbo and the work could cost £1500.

Has anyone else had similar problems? Is this expensive and should it need a new turbo what is a good price for this?

Sounds like the hose has just popped off again, maybe they didn't do the clip up tight enough the first time round.

The best way to tell where the leak is is with a fault code scan, either get a code reader for £20 off of ebay or get someone local with VAG-Com to do it, otherwise you will have to pay a dealer £60 for the privilege!

If you do need a new turbo (which it doesn't sound like you do) you could pick one up off of ebay and get it fitted for less than half of what they've told you.

I doubt it's the turbo. Unless there's oil ****ing out and bit's of metal everywhere, then it's probably something else! Turbo's very rarely just fail by themselves for no reason. The turbo life heavily relies on a good quality oil feed and drain, and a clean air supply.

Your first story sounded spot on with the diagnosis. Split hose/joint which opened up at high boost pressure levels, causing the noise, the ECU detected the pressure drop and eventually caused the car to go into limp mode to protect the turbo from being oversped. New hose should have fixed this. That all makes sense.

I'd take it back to the first garage to have another look at, as it sounds like it's either leaking again, or he missed another leak somewhere. Ask him for the error codes and post them up on here if you can. If there's a leak, the error code will help you find it.

:iagree: - it sounds like a leak on the HP side of the turbo; most likely a popped joint or split flexihose; worst case is a split SMIC, not a blown turbo.

Thank you all for the advice, I will get it checked out and hopefully it will be a simple repair relatively cheap to fix. I will keep my fingers crossed!

Unfortunately I'm absolutely useless with tools and wouldnt have a clue what i'm doing!
