Power Steering 1.4 16V 2001.

Featured Replies

HI, I haven't been on here for a while so Hello to anyone who doesn't remember me. Just bought a 1.4 16V, Yreg and it has a power steering problem, whirring and cluncking sound and the light comes on intermittently, also seems to throw the engine management light but that could be something else as there are other codes/probs. I thought it was the pump but not so sure now. Did a Vag-Com scan and it came up with the following codes;

00566, Steering assist. operation 27-10, implausible signal, intermittent.

01288 Terminal 30 steering assist 07-10, signal too low intermittent. and

00816 PAS Sensor (G250) 30-10, open circuit to positive, intermittent. I have also read some stuff on here and it looks to me to be the PAS Sensor, got the link to how to change the VRS one, Is this the same for the 1.4 or have I got the whole thing wrong? Also is the PAS sensor and the steering angle sensor the same thing or different? Appreciate any advice, thanks in advance:D.

Pst, try using the search function "PAS sensor" might work!

If you had bothered to read my original thread you would see I have already done a search. What I am asking is a couple of questions to clarify what I have read and fill in some gaps in my knowledge but if no-one wants to be friendly enough to help, well I dare say I will find out the info somewhere else.

Ok calm down.

The guide is for a non vRS, they tend to have the latter two piece sensor which very rarely go wrong.

Personally id say you have two issues, one being the sensor, the other a battery with insufficient voltage.

Apologies, I just get P'd off with people who don't read your post then give you a smart reply which tells you nothing.

The battery was changed on the car not long ago, maybe I should check it's the correct one? Is there a difference between the steering angle sensor and the PAS sensor then? Also do you think I have a problem with my PAS sensor (I seemed to hve all the symptoms when I was reading the posts that came up form the search I ran, noises, warning light, dimming headlights etc) or is it more likely to be something else? Here is the link to the How-to I read, I see now it may not be just for the VRS; http://www.fabia-vrs.com/technical-info/pas-sensor-change/ I think some of the codes the car had were there from when the battery was changed so I am giving it a couple of days to see what else might come up. I am fairly sire the EGR has a problem but that was going to be my next question. Cheers.

Assuming you dont have ESP then yes the steering angle and PAS sensors are one of the same thing.

If your battery has been changed then it should be around a 60ah one fitted, but might also mean the fault codes are old.

The car is an Elegance and so has ASR which is similar/better I think. Ran another fault code scan this morning and only 2 codes came up which confirms the theory that the other 11 were old codes. The 2 that remain are the Power steerng sensor one (00816) and the EGR, insufficient flow one (16785) which I am taking to be a faulty or clogged EGR valve, I will get to later when I start to consider extracting all the horses. At the moment my main concern is the PAS, also chacked the Battery and it's only a 40AH, thinking I may run it in to Halfords or somewhere, get them to check what the battery should be and if it is deffinately the wrong one, which it looks like it is and thinking about all the accessories on an Elegance I don't want a puny battery which won't even operate the basic systems and I will then kind of work from there, if that doesn't cure it change the sensor etc. Cheers for the help.

Unless anyone else has any other ideas?

Sorry for being incompetant, you're right I probably did not reach the end of your posting, I was just trying to save someone with a low post count getting flamed and then leaving the forum - but it seems that well intended action backfired on me!

All is forgiven, my post count will be low, we used to have a Fabia TDI but sold it and haven't had another Skoda since although we always wanted another Fabia. I have lurked a bit just to keep up to date but that's all. Anyway, we seem to be getting somewhere with the car, by tomorrow I should be more certain and will post something up, meantime feel free to suggest anything you can, learning as I go as usual.

Not sure if it'll help.. but I had a 1.4 16 Yreg elegance and my PAS pump went, but that just died... one morning I just had no PAS and the light was on. My sensor was apparently fine.. so it sounds like your symptoms may well be of a sensor, and not the pump! :)

Cheers for the replies guys, I decided to change the sensor yesterday, my local garage had one in stock and following discussion with a mate we convinced ourselves that it wasn't the battery. It is a bit small for teh car, maybe more suited to an MPI but Skoda say that 44Ah should be OK (mines 40 bt new). It wasn't getting any worse with lights wipers etc on and the clincher was Vag-Com which was clearly saying it's the sensor. So I changed it, not the most fun of jobs but it's done the trick and it's been fine since yesterday. I wanted to give it today on the road just to make sure, normally I wouldn't have got more than approx 5 miles without the light coming on so last night it did more than that and a couple of runs today of more than that again and I am as convinced as I can be. Next is the EGR, see separate post for that if you are interested. Thanks again, Faskoda.
