Oil!

Featured Replies

OK just checked my oil and its pretty low.

I havn't topped it up since I Bought it so I need to check which to use.

I've found in the garage some.....

"Castrol SLX Synthetiq Intelligence 0W-30 For Modern Audi, BMW and VW Engines"

This says on the back...."VW 502 00/505 00 (1/97) and 503 01 (9/99) and ACEA A3/B3/B4

and...

"Castrol EDGE 5W-30 Latest Technology for Modern Audi and VW Engines" (Fully Synthetic)

Which says on the back.....VW 504 00/507 00 and ACEA A3/B3/B4

In my manual it says...

Petrol Engines,

Multigrade High Lubricant Oils

Spec VW 500 00 (1)

Spec VW 502 00 (2)

Multigrade Oils

Spec VW 501 01 (1)

Spec ACEA A2 or A3 - 96 (3)

(1) a date not earlier than 11/92 should be indicated after this VW standard

(2) a date not earlier than 01/97 should be indicated after this VW standard

(3) This oil must only be used once for topping up within the spec exchange cycle if no aproved engine oil is available.

So which is the best to use??

Any recomendations??

Thanks Ash.

Those oils are a bit over the top for a MPi, the first one is suitable for PD engines on fixed service intervals and the second is suitable for cars on long life service intervals. A standard 10W40 should suffice for the MPi, but if you are stuck go with the 5W30, working on the premise that any oil is better than none.

I agree with Fordfan. When I had my MPI, I changed the oil twice and used semi-synthetic 10w-40 with no problems. Easy to get hold of and pretty cheap, so might be worth thinking about just doing a straight oil and filter change if it's not been touched since you bought it
