Stereo problem

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Im having a problem with my stereo in my Octy 51 plate VRS

What i did was tried replacing the original stereo with a 2Din.

Anyway as i unplugging it i heard a spark.

Needless to say none of my stereos are working in the car now.

Ive tried changing the 25amp fuse. still no joy. I can also hear hissing from the tweaters now.

Thanks guys.

Oh.. Will it show up on a VAG-COM?

Sounds like you have another fuse gone somewhere!!!

Check as well that not of the wires are bared anywhere and shorting out...

Thanks for the reply.

Ive tried replacing the fuse at the back of the stereo aswel. When i replaced the fuse it didnt look blown?

Do other items work in the car such as interior light, cigarette lighter etc? Sounds like another blown fuse.

Yes i checked everything like that..

Might be a coincidence but my aircon isnt getting cold now? I havnt charged it up since i bought the car though (nearly 2 years ago).

tried a 3rd cd player last night. Again, Didnt work!

Does anyone know if it will show up on VAGCOM if its a blown fuse?

What do you mean by 'stereo does not work'. Does it power up but not play music or is it totally lifeless? Can't see how tweeters can produce hiss if the stereo is not working at all.

There are two power feeds to the stereo, switched and constant. The switched feed generally comes from the ignition switch on older cars, not sure on the octy. it is possible that the switched feed from the ignition switch has become damaged (this happened on my old golf). Do you have the haynes manual, you should find wiring diagrams in that.

Also, plenty of pin out diagrams for the octy stereo wiring online. Get a multimeter and test if voltages are present on the supply leads.

The unit totally lifeless.

BUT, When i tested a Sony HU on it yesterday it did open and close the front panel (and made the usual sony beep)

What did you do when the igniton switch was damaged??

In that case you have the constant feed connection. My old sony would allow me to eject CDs when the key was not in the ignition.

My ignition switch was gubbed. First the stereo stopped working and later the car wouldn't start either. Had to replace the switch which was actually not to bad a job on the golf although it did require removal of the steering wheel and column.

You need to test the for a voltage on the switched supply to the stereo to be sure.
