How noisy???

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm looking at trading up to the tdi vrs. At first test and a shortish drive, the vrs pd tdi is noticeably noisy but bearable. Just wondering what people think in the long term once familiarity creeps in and the initial excitement wears off. Will have I have to turn my radio up very loud on the motorway on long journeys or have to start shouting at my passengers??

Most of the noise is from the tyres ......Skoda seem to fit either Dunlop or bridgestone tyres ....both of which are very noisy  there are loads of threads on here discussing the quietest tyres....and when fitted they can make a hell of a difference

My vRS TFSI (2008) came on 18" dia. Continental tyres, which are fairly quiet given their low profile. I would never decribe it as a quiet car, but neither do I find it particularly noisy. There is not much wind noise on mine, even at very high speeds, and most of road roar seems to come from the back.

My experience with Bridgestone tyres on Japanese cars is that they are noisy, especially when they are worn. The sidewalls are very thick and stiff on most B'stones (ask a tyre fitter!) - I think this is what conducts a lot of the noise.

Engine noise is only really an issue in first and second - once you get above low speed the tyre noise takes over. It's not a problem long term.

cheers for the responses, I'm off for a long drive, but very interesting to hear about how much the tyres make a difference. If only we had decent tarmac in this country! The 4th richest nation and we still miss out compared to our euro neighbours:thumbdwn:

Try driving in Detroit, Michigan, USA (the richest country). Our roads are smooth as glass in comparison. You could lose a Fiat 500 in some of their potholes, the remains of shredded tyres are everywhere!
