Engine "singing"

Featured Replies

..yes, even if diesel!

I get it when flooring from still, 1st gear and I can listen a sort of "wheeee" while car gets quickly speeds :D

Strange enough, up to now I couldn't get it in other gears...

Does anybody experience something similar?

BTW is there a well defined quick launch procedure for VRS TDI, assuming dry and good road?

turbo whistle or a bit of induction roar maybe? certainly get both with my pd170

No, not turbo whistle, otherwise I could hear it in any gear, when flooring from low speeds.

Perhaps induction related, but wonder how's that I get it only in 1st gear, again...

Just wondering if it might be related to a mapping parameter: do ECU maps take in account gear even with MT?

Select 1st gear - floor the throttle, revs will hold at 3,000rpm - release or dump the clutch and wheeeee; take off. :D:thumbup:

or, if like me you prefer to drive with a degree of mechanical sympathy, get revs to c.1500rpm and release the clutch blending with greater throttle application to build turbo boost and whoosh ;) watchout for wheelspin/axle tramp  that will be reduced if you have a WALK fitted. :)

PS> You have had the 26E6 update done to your ECU haven't you? This give a much better characteristic to the power delivery under 3,000rpm for you to do a quick getaway.

As to your whistling noise - no idea. ECUs can and are remapped to restrict max torque in, say, 1st and 2nd gears, but not as far as I know on the VAG PD170 engine. Any remap will only increase output of original map.

Best engine sound ever heard is Steve Perez's Lancia Stratos Rally car at the start of a special stage. Almost orchestral- fan-bloody-tastic.

I say a TV clip last year (I think) of Lewis Hamilton's McLaren F1 car in the garage 'singing' Happy Birthday

Hi bahnstormer, thanks for suggestions on quick launch. Gosh! I can't even figure out what might happen while releasing clutch at 3K

About the noise, it's a sort of "pitch" rather than a whistle and it's not a sound of something going the wrong way (at least, I hope  ) but something going really fast :D

I slightly modded my airbox but it seems strange to me to advert the sound only under hard acceleration in 1st gear. Is engine breathing more? but only in 1st gear, so at low speeds? Perhaps is it related to the higher increasing rev rate I have in 1st gear rather than with other gears? Yes, I'm more convinced of this.

Thanks for your patience

That's why I tried it once, and once only! :D

it may be induction roar then, I only get it at slow speeds, only faint, I think it gets drowned out by wind noise at higher speeds

Perez's car You tube

tehehe sounds a bit like a battery powered RC car :P
