Strange smoke

Featured Replies

I have a 56 reg 2.0TDI. I have noticed over the last few days a cloud of blue/white smoke after I have been standing/moving very slow in traffic for a bit then moving off it happens. this is the only time it happens, no smoke when running or starting or even just standing for a minute or so

Any ideas??

Alan

Blue = oils and that sounds like it's oil getting past the seals while idling and then being burnt when you move off.

Which oil are you using in your engine?

EDIT: Also are you on variable servicing and are you still under warranty?

Oil wise it's what ever the dealer put in on the service in Feb. It's serviced every 10000 and its never used oil and is not using it at the moment

It's under warranty until Oct this year

EDIT

It's not doing it at start up or just standing ther ticking over for a few minutes

I fear cheezemonkhai is right, blue smoke is oil burnt...

P.S.: Let me ask: any chance to have got some oil in the tank?

No not unless the local Tescos have had a problem but not heard of anything

Run through this tank of derv and get it as low as possible, then fill up from a station with a high turn around of fuel (eg a busy station).

Run the car as normal and keep an eye out for the smoke and if there is even a hint of blue smoke then I would get up your dealer and ask them to look at it. From what you're saying oil is getting into the cylinders, be that via a seal, the EGR, the turbo or another mechanism.

Since your car is a PD140 and they have a reputation of blowing turbo's I'd be thinking it was the turbo and getting up the dealer without running through the tank of fuel if it's fairly full as the last thing you want is a turbo actually going bang as this could take out the engine or exhaust in a bad case.

i had exactly the same thing on my PD140 but it only happened 3 times while I had it. Sitting in traffic idling then moving off caused a big cloud of smoke although mine was more white and dont think there was any blue in it.

Took it to the dealers and they couldnt find anything wrong with it and it never did it again which I found most bizarre.

Definitely get it to the dealers to get checked out.

Thanks for all the replies booked in at the dealers Tuesday for them to have a look

White smoke tends to indicate Turbo trouble. If the car is still under warrant I would get them to check it.

Hope everything goes well.

White smoke on start up indicates the combustion chamber temperature is a bit low. If the engine's been running for more than a few seconds, then that suggests turbo oil seals.

Blue smoke normally indicates oil getting into the combustion chamber somehow, which normally points to worn or broken piston rings, inlet valve stem oil seals or the turbo compressor side oil seals.

All of these want to be warranty jobs, because 2 of them the alternative is much wallet pain!
