Help. Drained my DSG gearbox ! Octy Mk.2.

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

While changing my engine oil and filter I have managed to open the wrong drain plug and drained my DSG gearbox.!! (Not drained actually. About a litre came out.) How do I refill it and with what? I can't take it anywhere to be done obviously.

Thanks in anticipation.

Whoops, unless you have diagnostic equipment and the tools to fill the box its on a trailer to a dealer for you.

That's what I was afraid you would say.!

Only need dealer if required to reset the box after the oil change.

Otherwise you can do the oil and filter change yourself. Not hard, requires car level on axal stands.

This is a link to make up your own filling tool... Click here

Temp can be measured using an infrared thermometer like those used for taking your temp.

PM me with your email address if you would like a pdf of the VAG DSG Oil change procedure.

Oh one thing !!!!! Even if you removed the metal DSG plug, only a little excess oil should have drained out.

It's only when the inner plastic plug/ short tube is undone does all the oil drain out.

Thanks, that's good news. The two local Skoda dealers came up with differring answers. One said that there should be a filler plug on the side of the box. - cant find one. Other said there should be between 5 and 7 litres in the box. Only about a litre drained out so I supose there must still be plenty of oil in the box? So how do I check the level? And how do I put the litre or so back in? None of the dealers knew.Yet it is part of the 4 year service.

Can I drive the car with only this amount of oil in it?

How do I "PM" someone to get the PDF file ?

I've sent you a PM to reply to. Check your message Inbox on this site.

Drain/refill plug is on the bottom of the gear box. There is no other access to the box and no other way to check the oil level.

Normally a drain and refill requires about 5.5l oil.

Still need the refill tool I posted a link to, to do the job.

Ummmm providing you did not unscrew the inner drain tube which also acts as a max oil reference/overflow, I see no need to top up the box providing the oil temp was with in the parameters explained in the pdf when the oil was drained.

basically, to fill it from empty you put 5.5L in, and then get it up to temperature, and let the excess run out.

How many miles has yours done?

To make it easier for everyone, here,s the info..

It's for a 2.0TFSI engine but will be the same for most other DSG boxes.

i'd see a dealer myself and take it as a lesson learned.

Many thanks mrlapou,

I've had a quote off one Skoda garage of £82 to drain and refill the box. Out of 4 Skoda garages I rang, only one could tell me how the oil is changed or topped up..:rotz:

They seemed to know the procedure - same as you sent me, so I think I will take it to them rather than try to do it myself.

I will try to get the RAC to transport it to the garage for me. If not, I will drive it slowly! Surely if the oil was TOO low I would have a warning light on somewhere?

Car has done 12K miles Chris. Not bad for 3 year old.! (We have another car )- and I ride a motorbike as well.)

Many thanks for all your help. I will let you know the outcome.

i wouldn't drive it myself.

When changing the DSG oil, the excess is drained whilst the engine is running. As the engine is running there will be oil in circulation, so undoing the drain plug (level tube still in place) without the engine running will leave the box low on oil. My advice is not to drive it at all, even if it means £100 or so for recovery as opposed to £1000's for a replacement gear box.

So way off the 40k change interval then

Exactly what I was about to say. The bung should only be removed (but not the drain tube) when the engine is running and thus the gearbox pump going.

Yes, way off the 40K Chris.!

Thanks to all for your advice. Car is in the garage now so will let you know outcome tomorrow.

OK, got the car back. They did a "gearbox service" which is, drain all gearbox oil and refill plus new filter. Should have cost £135 standard charge. but as I had been quoted £80 by the Tech they charged me that plus the filter plus VAT = £102. Just for removing the wrong drain plug ! So beware when changing your oil.

It was refilled as per mrlapou's instructions details, into the drain hole.

So thanks all for your advice,
