Tyre wear

Featured Replies

Has anyone had the same problem, being, having to inflate front tyres to 36 psi to avoid wear on the outer edges.

I have posted this in the Fabia section, but had exactly the same problem with my mk1 Octavia 110.

So far my Octy sport does not seem to be suffering but the tyres are fairly new.

My Fabia vRS has suffered quite noticeably. Be interesting to hear. Never seen this on any of my other cars.

Nope, but then i do my own 4 wheel alignment about every 6 months, and had no uneven tyre wear

I get wear on the inside more...........might be due to my camber tho ;)

not here either, sounds like typical bad geometry setup. You need a proper 4WA done, not the cheap 2WA that the likes of kwik fit offer.

Mine do wear slightly harder on the inside than the outside, but I run mine at 2.3Bar (loaded setting inside the fuel cap). I have also found it worthwhile getting a calibrated pressure guage as the ones at Tesco's, Sainsbury's etc. are often miles out. I have to admit to liking the way the car feels with the tyres pumped up very hard. It just seems 'nimbler' through the bends. I probably ought to point out that I managed almost 40,000 front/60,000 back miles on my original set of Bridgestone Potenzas and I only changed the rears because they had bulges in them.

If you're worried about it, then £60-£80 would seem like a reasonable investment to get your car(s) aligned on a Hunter set-up.

Not had that. Ran my Fabia vRS now for 4.5 years and 45,000 miles with no uneven wear on the original Michelins, my winter tyres, or the Goodyear F1's I have on the front now. As above, looks like a full alignment needed.

the VRS is deffo better with higher tyre pressures

Thanks for all the replies. The 4 wheel alignment has been done, as it was on my old Octavia. The tyre wear is on both edges of both front tyres which is symptomatic of under inflated tyres, hence running 36psi. Strange.

About to change wheels and tyres on my Fabia vRS so will keep a close eye and keep you posted.

Sorry, should have been clearer. Made a bit of a hash of the wording. Cheers.

I run 35-36psi in the fronts of my Octavia II on 18" wheels, been running at 33psi for a while and never had a problem with wear.

Running 37 at front on 1.4 TDI (lighter engine) feels better, tyres lasting 38K - michelins - and no wear problems. It does seem that the lower recommended pressures are a compromise. The question is what do you lose? Maybe some grip in the wet or snow; maybe a little noisier. I've never found any real difference.
