PD130 intermittent starting issue - missfire/smoke

Featured Replies

Evenin' all,

I've had a slight issue with my pd13o passat for some time. This happens very infrequently although it's done it two days running now so I'm thinking I might need to find out what's wrong before it gets worse.

Basically, sometimes when I start the car, it is rough and sounds like it's miss-firing/not firing on all cylinders. There's also quite a lot of smoke when this happens. Usually switching the engine off and restarting sorts the problem, on occasion I have had to do this twice.

No faults showed on a vag com scan.

Any ideas? It's starting to worry me.

Thanks in advance!

This is a total shot in the dark and I will probably be corrected but it sounds to me like you need new glow plugs, maybe 1 or 2 arent working causing the cylinder/s to be cold thus the bad start up and lots of smoke,

check glow plugs, and perhaps the MAF is on the way out / dirty.

On the PD100 engine I had, there was a sensor fault but that should have logged a fault :(

Another vote here for a glow plug related fault. Possibly the glow plug relay.

Yeah the glow plug idea sounds good, I hadn't thought of that to be honest :o

I did notice the maf was looking a bit manky the other day, so I might change that on spec too.

Thank you

You could also try the temp sensor, mine ran a bit lumpy at times when it went south, normally puts the eml on though, but it is a cheap part and you can diy it, the other two suggestions add up as well, although a MAF going bad normally results in the car feeling like the turbo isn't working. hth.
