Removing data from an old PC

Featured Replies

I am giving an old PC to a pal. I want to remove my daughters data from it (she has been using it for the last 2 years).

I built it myself 4 years ago - XP - but no longer have any discs for either XP or the dual video cards in it.

Normally I would do a format/reinstall but can't do it without the discs.

What are my best options for removing the personal data.

Cheers

1) Dukes Boot and Nuke - DBAN

This is a boot CD and will totally clean everything off and destroy the data

2) Eraser

This is a file destroyer tool

This would allow you to delete the files to the recycle bin and then write random data over them so they can not be recovered.

You would then do a basic clean up, uninstall anything you didn't want, use a registry/system cleaner and then use Eraser to write random data over the empty space.

This will leave windows on there plus whatever other software you leave on but will render your data properly gone assuming you delete it.

The format and reinstall option you mention leaves most of the data on the disk and it is very easily recovered.
