90 degree Turbo Pipe - BLOWING OFF !!!!!!

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a problem were the top Turbo to Metal Pipe (the one that goes across the back of the engine and down to the crappy connector) 90degree elbow keeps blowing off!! I had a T-bolt clamp on that I think was a bit too wide, so it was not sitting in the groove properly, it was also at the limit of tightening. it blew of on Sunday and I put it back on and tightened up OK. But today it blew off again in Cardiff. I "borrowed" some gaffer tape to wrap around the pipe to get a few mm extra diameter for the clamp to get a bit more force but it blew off again on the way home to Bridgend, so I removed the T-bolt and the tape. Cleaned up the metal pipe and degreased the inside of the rubber pipe and reassembled with the original Jubilee clip (which sits between the double bead on the metal pipe as it is narrower). Went out for a run to check it was all OK and it blew that off as well???????

Where am I going wrong? do I need to roughen the surface of the pipe and the inside of the Rubber pipe or has the rubber pipe become to slippery? I am at a loss on this as I really tightened the original clamp down hard and checked that the pipe would not move,,,

I just posted this thread and noticed that it didnt show up on the "New Posts" link??? any Idea why not?

Because you have already read it. So it won't so in your new posts until its updated by someone else.

mmmm sounds like a problem that....

it is commin off the turbo? or the boost pipe?

what boost is it runnin? must be a lot for that to happen, also have a check of the DV as it might not be oppenin to release pressure?? not too sure mate,

does it happen under accel or on lift off/gear change?

how hard are you driving for this to happen?

it is commin off the turbo? or the boost pipe? comes off the metal pipe that goes across the back of the engine - first joint after the Turbo

what boost is it runnin? peaks at 20 then drops to 18psi (drops quicker in 2nd)

does it happen under accel or on lift off/gear change? Acceleration

how hard are you driving for this to happen? How hard do you think :D

lol

mmm

lookin at ur sig it is moddified?

lol

could it be that the lip on the pipe is not there ne more or just worn? could be that you might of had it too tight to start with and its squashed the pipe a tad? wilthout seein it mate its hard to tell, is it the std black pipe you usin? I have mine somewhere jus in case aut happens to the Autobahn 88 ones I got. could jus be that the std (if it is) pipe is just old and worn and when hot it jus slips off as a result?

the pipes are still the originals.. I removed the crappy O-ring connection following the guide on UK mkIV's and replaced all the clamps with T-Bolt clamps which have been great. but when I had a really bad Boost leak on Sunday in Carmarthen I assumed it was where I hadn't beaded the pipe where I cut the O-ring Socket off.. but it turned out to be this top hose? the ends of most of the pipes have crush marks but they all seem to be holding tight. It just seems that the pipe is pulling out from under the clamps?

might be time to look at doing the £200 FMIC

Yeah do it! Get one of the kits that goes to the right of the engine, tell me if it will miss my strut brace :D

lol

sounds good mate,

not sure bout why it keeps comin off tho mate as if its tight enough, then like you say it shouldnt. hope you get it sorted tho mate,

Is the ribbing on the inside of the clip maybe worn?

Have you checked to see if the DV is working? As otherwise when your on full boost (20psi), and then suddenly lift off the throttle to change gear, the excess pressure will not be bypassed, and you'll get a massive pressure spike, blowing any weak connections open.

Or it could just be that your hose/pipe/clip is worn out and you just need a new one......

Personally I avoid silicone pressure hoses as they have a tendancy to move about.

thats what I said at first lol, I have the autobahn 88 kit on mine and even when bootin it I have never had any trouble???

Haha don't worry Billy, you still have first dibs on the glory if it is the DV!!

Ok can i have dibs on the N249 bypass :)

N249 bypass coupled with the n75J= boost spike.

you confirmed what I thought thats all lol.

have fun in USofA mate, hope you bring some nice goodies back lol.

If its happening under accel tho I dont think it is gonna be the DV lol, it could be jus the pipe is buggered and the clip is all smooth. mmmm tis a tricky one this lol

all the best
