Slooooow wipers

Featured Replies

Evening all,

Cleaning my windscreen today I noticed that the wipers seemed to have slowed down. I've done a search on here, and it sounds like my motor may be on the way out.

Now bearing in mind I am totally not mechanically minded, is this something I can fix myself, or am I best taking it to a garage. Any ideas of a cost?

It's a 2000X SLX Tdi.

Cheers!

If they are slow could be the linkage. Not that hard to change and not to expensive.

Sounds like the linkage is seizing up, which is fairly common. You could try some penetrating fluid followed by oil down the spindles which the wipers attach to. The linkage can be removed and diassembled, cleaned and greased, though it may be more cost effective to replace at around £40 to £45 for the part plus the labour

yeah sounds like the linkage you might be able spray some wd40 through the scuttle pannel on to the linkage but you`ll be better off replacing the linkage in the long run

Another vote for the linkage, which is a known weak point on all VAG cars using this platform.

Hi

my wipers are wierd too.... they occasionally cross on the inital upswing and they both clatter down into the rubber at the bottom of the windscreen on the down swing, before then coming back up about half an inch to finish the cycle. the drivers side one is miles away from getting near to the edge of the windscreen when it finishes it's upswing. i would hazard a guess that both wipers need repositioning/re/aligning a little bit, but then i'd end up with both wipers sticking up by a small angle when they are not in use, instead of being nicely flat at the bottom... is there something on the linkage that may be off? it's the odd little inch they rise again atthe end of the cyhas me most confused...

Octavia 2000 W plate (pre facelift)

any ideas?

Matt

Ninja_boy, without seeing your car I can't be sure, but it sounds from the description like the self-park position of the wipers has been set wrong.
