Pikey FMIC mods??????

Featured Replies

Being a great fan of "economical alternatives" (Pikey and Proud :D) I was wondering if anyone has tried using intercoolers from other vehicles? I know that the Calibra will take an IC from a Frontera for example. I think it may possibly fit the Octi as well, its just the pipes are on the back instead of the sides but it is a good bit wider than the now famous £200 FMIC of Martziniuk so it may just fit?

Would also be good to know if any pipework from other cars could be used as well. As I want to keep the look of the car as low key as possible a nice new shiny alloy FMIC is not needed. A nice beat up old black one would do nicely

So is anyone going to own up to having tried it? and if so did it work OK?

I cant see why not. As long as you can route the pipe work then it makes sence i guess to keep costs down.

I was going to use an ex WRC Evo 9 Intercooler for my FMIC but ended up giving to a mate as i had not got round to fitting it.

Given the number of hoses that are used in standard cars, it stands to reason that you could make up all the pipe work required from them. It would take many trips to many breakers tho im sure :)

Go for it.

Hmmm, never thought about a scrappy for the actual radiator...

or Intercooler.....

or Intercooler.....

yeah, that's what I meant - it's still a radiator though essentially - just an air one...

I originally was going to use an L shaped cooler but the auction went too high. I also looked at the mondeo cooler, this maybe an alternative. So long as it fits behind the crash bar.

LOL. i know mate, just being silly.

I was over at my friends workshop at the weekend and he has a K1 Attack in at the moment that he is fitting a Large Turbo 1.8t lump into the back off. Because its mid engined and has limited space they are fitting a charge cooler. The thing is tiny and meant to be more efficient that an Inter cooler. Not sure how to go about fitting one to our cars but could be another option.

doesnt the cost go up for charge cooling though, so not a Pikey option. I had the measurements from a Frontera one and it is 60mm deep X 200mm high X 740mm long so the pipes should just about fit aroud the rad? some available really cheap to :D

Yeah, Charge cooling is more pricey so not a Pikey option. Just something i had not considered for the VRS :)

If your prepared to do away with the crash bar or mount it behind it then the worlds your oyster. At 200mm high there will be a bit more hidden behind the crash bar, on mine there is already a bit.
