Smashed Mirror

Featured Replies

So annoying that someone can smash someone elses mirror and just drive off.

The casing is slightly damaged.

Does anyone know if I have to buy the entire wing mirror or would it be possible to buy just the mirror and use super glue?

I admit I know nothing about cars.

You should be able to buy just the glass and it's usually attached with double sided tape.

Is it heated? If it is when u stick another bit of glass over the original I doubt the heating bit will work properly. Also if it is electric , have you tried to adjust it? You could probably pick a good 2nd hand complete mirror unit up at a VAG specialist breakers - I think the new price for an elec/heated mirror is quite steep , then it would need to be painted, If youve got a classic with manual mirror then the fix with the new glass should be fine.

Phone up your local skoda dealer and ask for the mirror glass for whatever car you own. The old one unclips (if still attached) and the new one clips in its place. Should be around £20

... and finally remember to fold it in whenever you parallel park!

I think it's the same as the Fabia.

Go to Halfrauds. Got to the area where the wing mirrors are. There will be a catalogue there, look inside it and find your model of fabia. Buy the replacement glass it suggests, will probably cost about a tenner. The glass will have really sticky plastic on the back of fit, just stick this on top of your existing mirror after pulling off all the excess broken glass you can.

Only problem is if you're original mirror is heated.

Why is it that some people are scared of going to the dealers - generally parts are not that expensive and they fit

Hello,

Someone kindly smashed off the (driver's) door mirror completely and was found dangling by it's electrical wires.

Fool-hardly I took it to Skoda main dealer asking them to sort it out (big mistake).

See attached bill !!!

Noting the drivers door mirror has a split mirror section, as opposed to just one piece on passenger side.

Definitely go to scrappers yard/search the net or ask about on this site.

Good-luck.

Tim - I 2nd what Ian says. Local stealer quoted me £50 for the casing, £70 to re-spray it, plus VAT plus glass, then said they wouldn't do it and I'd have to buy a full unit with the internal at a ridiculous £300 + labour. As if. That's why people don't want to use them. You can buy the heated mirrors at Halfrauds and they're still cheaper than a stealer.

I had mine sprayed and fitted for £120 by an independent mechanic.

(Apologies for bumping an old thread, but felt unncessary to make a new one)

My father's driver side wing mirror mysteriously became smashed while parked in a car park earlier. Strangely the outer casing and body work is fine, but the glass is all broken - probably from the stress of being struck by another car.

Have looked on ebay for replacement mirrors and they are available, even for heated mirrors, and at a reasonable price. Has anyone ever bought such a thing from ebay?

(He's still going to enquire with the local dealer, and pop down to Halfords, but I'm just thinking of saving him a bit of money if possible)

Thanks.

Hello dsw182

Hopefully your in luck with Halfords/ Skoda parts dept for a replacement.

As you see my old statement (above) it costly to replace complete unit, believe without respray about £60 odd pounds

Drivers mirror as you know has a split division which could/may present a problem with a stick-over type replacement mirror??

Perhaps try a scrap yard perhaps on the internet for complete replacement, maybe a non-electric type.??

Bought a heated glass one from e-bay a few weeks ago because the heating elements had failed on the original. £9 and good quality; comes complete with instructions by post the next day. HTH

i have also purchased mirror glass from ebay - whats better is that as the fabia is the same glass as the mkI octy and mkIV golf, you can go for heated blue anti-dazzle glass... although the heater connections may need adjusting.

PL

You think those dealer prices are steep!!

Weve just claimed on the insurance for a wing mirror for our x5!! Bmw wanted 780 plus vat!! The glass was 160 on its own!!
