Leaking rubber gaiter

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I had a crack at doing a visual inspection and I found a leaking rubber gaiter which i guess belongs to the driveshaft - not entirely sure.

Money is tight at the moment, so can I afford to leave it for another 6 months without serious damage or does it need to be replace immediately?

Also how hard is it to replace although I'm not keen on working under the car, otherwise roughly how much will it cost to get replaced?

Thanks

Looks like one of the inner cv boots. Will definately need doing - sooner rather than later to protect the joint. Haven't got a clue as to prices, but not all that difficult.

Yes that's the inner boot that has split and should be replaced ASAP. The part itself won't be expensive, but the labour might be. I don't know if you can get at the inner boot by releasing the wishbone ball joint to let the shaft move out.

Thanks for the replies. I take it's not an easy DIY job then.

Think I had it done for £78, Hour and a Half labour.

Stealers have quoted me £105 all in for the Inner CV Boot replacment. (SE London)

Sure it can be done DIY, need the car up off the deck so you could get to it nicely though!

Are you sure that the gaiter has split? Looks like it's just the clip that has come off - 2min tie wrap job? Then order the proper one.

As said, looks like clamp is missing and allowing grease to escape ??

If so, pump grease back-in, using grease gun between gaiter and shaft, replace clamp/ jubilee clip or plastic tie perhaps ??

Fingers crossed clamp fell off.

Yeah it does look like the clip is missing, I hope it is as I have been quoted between £108 - £190.00 for a replacement

I will have a quick check again before I book the car in.

Thanks guys

Thanks chaps it's only the clip that has come off. Is it likely that the grease would have become contaminated with dust/dirt as I really don't know how long it's come off? If so, will a complete strip down / flush out and refill with new grease really be the correct thing to do.

It would be advisable; the good news is that a local garage would probably do it by reversing the boot, cleaning and regreasing, then reversing and reclipping the boot; no need to remove the shaft, which takes a while.
