Extended Warantee prices

Featured Replies

As My Octy is coming to the end of its 3 year warantee I enquired at 3 different Skoda dealers for prices on a 1 or 2 extended warantee and got 3 different prices for exactly the same thing.

I would have expected a genuine Skoda Extended to cost the same from all dealers, are they allowed to charge what they like and if so does anyone know where I can the best deal.

My best quote was £299 for 1 year and £465 for 2 years, but from different dealers - both selling genuine Skoda extendeds.

Also 2 dalears offered 2 years Skoda Assist for £50, with warantee, the 3rd wanted £166 for the same thing.

I am a little confused

Hi Just done this myself - I rang 2 dealers one only had the 1 year option the other offerred 2 years for £549 including breakdown.

Also bear in mind they will require a chargeable inspection before extending!

Ours agreed reduction as we had a service at the same time.

One of the prices quoted to you looks better than we got quoted/paid and looks a good deal to me!

My warranty/Skoda assistance runs out in January next year and I'm undecided what to do.

I've spoken to my local dealer and they have said that I should go back and see them about 3 weeks before my warranty expires (car will also require its first MOT).

For 30mins labour charge they will give the car a full going over to check for anything that might need warranty work and that 30 minutes also covers as a pre-extended warranty check should I decide to buy a new warranty.

I've been looking at the Tesco Finest warranty for my vRS as it seems to cover absolutely everything at a cost of around £339 for the year.

Sure I'd have to get breakdown on top of that.

go back to the others with the quote you got from the cheapest place and say you that you dont really want to go with the cheapest garage but could they match the price and see what they come up with.

WD did 13 months for £300 and looks very very similar to the tesco plan.

I went into my local Skoda dealer (Sparshatts of Fareham) and not 1 of the 3 people I asked had any clue that Skoda offered extended warranties. I assured them that they did, but the blank looks didn't give me any faith that they would be able to arrange cover. Anyone purchased an extension somewhere on the South Coast - Southampton dealer maybe ?

Interesting discussion this one...the general opinion on this thread seems to be - it's a must have...but is it?

It's a lot of money to cover potential repairs - I know it's just like insurance, it's a gamble...my experience is that these things have that many exclusions etc...it may be worth putting the money aside to pay for any repairs required.

What are Vrs owners experiences - are most warranty claims <3yrs or once the care is OOW? My warranty expires in Feb...so I'll have to make the same decision...as shipping the car for another seems unlikely in the current climate.

Horses for courses.

£549 for 2 years = £275 a year

Similar AA break down circa £100-140 per year - Direct Line a bit cheaper

So for £135 - £175 we are getting a years extended warranty. For my peace of mind thats a price I am happy to pay. Make that £505 as offerred and if you can afford it I would say you cant afford not to!

As to Sparshatts - they are a Skoda dealer but not a Skoda approved Used dealer (found this out when we bought our car from them). Nearly walked away from the deal because of it. So only warranty on used cars is manufacturere no 12 month Skoda Warranty on the cars. They only sell their own warranty which can only be claimed at their dealership. The aldershot dealer does know about the warranty, Cranleigh did not know about the 2 year option!

As an ex car dealer my general view of aftermarket 'warranties' (which are mostly in fact 'mechanical breakdown insurance' policies) is that they are not good value for the average punter. The only thing that makes me think they might be value for an Octy owner is the cover for air-con failure. Compressor failure on many VAG cars seems to be VERY common within the first four years and it can cost £800+ for a dealer repair.

In the car trade many traders speak favourably of the Black Horse/Car Care Plan policy. This is basically what the Tesco policy is and they do seem to elicit fewer complaints from customers than some of the other companies. So far as I know Tesco are the only people retailing CCP policies (you usually buy via a dealer as part of a used car sale). CCP is actually part of GMAC (General Motors) so whether they will continue given the break-up of GM is an interesting consideration. I have had some dealing with customers who have purchased Warranty Direct policies and I would recommend CCP (Tesco) over WD, any day of the week.

WD are underwritten by lloydes (which are black horse finance) and the Tesco policy looks very similar, plus the tesco policy was not available at the time of looking.

FWIW I'd say it's also worth it for the DMF and turbo failures that are very expensive should they occur.

.

My warranty runs out in a couple of months, but I like the idea of spending 30 mins labour to check for any issues before the 3 years is up

Cheers,

Balham

This was at ALS-Lock but I'm sure most dealerships will offer the service.

The car will be due its first MOT anyway, so might just as well get that done a month in advance (as you've got no choice on this).

Garage gets 30 mins labour charge - so if they don't find anything wrong then they still get paid.

If they do find something then Skoda should authorise it under warranty (more work and money for garage I'm assuming) and you've got piece of mind that the car will end its warranty period all running fine.

Win/Win situation I feel.

When I had a Clio back when 12 month warranties were normal on a new car, the dealer ha it in for an hour FOC about a fortnight before the end of the warranty to find any problems that were claimable. They didnt find anything though but I thought it was a good idea.

Is this 30mins check a Skoda thing that all dealers offer? If so I'd consider that...but is 30mins enough to find any issues??

Interesting discussion on the warranty thing...seems I am out on a limb on this one !

On topic of warranties ,some time ago ,the AA tried to sell me one for a very reasonable price .Might be worth seeing if eother RAC/AA do something similar .( If they've stopped doing it - sorry)

My local Skoda dealer Bickertons in Sheffield sent me a letter for a free end of warranty check when I had my last car (2.0 TDi PD140) a couple of months ago.

They replaced my Turbo as it had the dreaded whistle, and having read the million threads on the topic, I pointed out that sometimes it indicates imminent turbo failure (although not always) and they did it no problem

My new cars warranty is also up in July, so I am hoping I get another end of warranty check with this.

They have been great though having replaced my Jumbo box under warranty, and sorted out the rumbling passenger seat as well.

I also had a service and mot as well

Cant fault them.

I will keep you informed if/when I get the letter through anyway.

I am also going to enquire about an extension to the warranty, as I have been in on numerous occasions to get bits done (cos Im so damn fussy I guess :P) so I will let you know how much it will be

Cheers

Damian
