MOT rip-off or??

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just had my Octavia MOT-d and it failed.

Was told that there is a leak ac centre exhaust pipe and new clamp and seal is needed (£114.60) and rear discs and pads need replacing (£138).

Are they trying to rip me off?

Don't know if I should go on with the service or find a more reasonable garage.

Thanks for any advice!

Why are they trying to rip you off ?

if there is a leak in the exhaust, then that is a fail, and if the rear disks need changing then that need doing, but you could get the parts cheaper and do it your self, but the £250aprox is poss about right for a garage

Pointless to quote previous post.

Clamps retale at £4 so £110 to get it changed is a rip-off, that's why.

Similarly, rear brake kit is £38, so yeah, £200+ for both to be replaced is a bit much, at least for me.

As for previous post.

Easy to check brakes yourself, just see if there is anything left on the pads and if there is a lip on the discs.

HowStuffWorks "How Disc Brakes Work"

Usual for a garage to use the old 'discs are a bit warn and could do with replacing'.If its not going to fail the MOT with current pads/disc's I suspect you can leave.

As for the bracket, sounds a little steep did you get breakdown of parts/labour?

Over-charging, definately!

But you said it was leaking so will need new exhaust not just a clamp

Discs have a recommended thickness and this may be what they are telling you about. If you are dubious get a micrometer and measure them.

£114 sounds quite cheap these days for a replacement exhaust.

this is why i use a MOT centre that only does mot`s. :)
