With the right tools you can read and write the eprom through the diagnostic port.

....can i write to as well as read data?

A factory level tool will allow you to recode modules by writing new data to supported control modules.

A factory tool with the proper subscriptions will allow you to flash the memory of a module, updating it's contents to current revision levels from the manufacturer.

Some after market tools have the ability to read the electronic memory of a module, make changes to the data, and then put it back. To do this, you must have the knowledge of what parameters are stored in the particular locations and you must know the coding for the "bits" you want to change. With a tool like this, you can do damage to components if set parameters wrong. For instance, with the wrong parameters, you could end up damaging the engine should a setting in the ECU be wrong.

What is it that you would like to do? If we know that, better suggestions can be made.

^ What he said :) lol
