Aircon and radiator fan not working.

Featured Replies

Hi, my Aircon stopped working on my octavia -03 sometime during the winter i quess. At least there is no cold air comming out of the fans.

The large radiator fan does not start, so i guess that the large fan is connected to the aircon i some way? The EPC light was lit and the car did was hard to start sometimes then it was warm so i changed the temp-sensor. it starts ok now, but the EPC is still lit.

No fuses blown.

Is the aircon clutch ok?

Also, knowing which engine you have would help.

As for the EPC, some engine fault codes leave the EPC illuminated even when the fault condition is corrected, until they are deleted from the memory.

Im not sure how to check if the clutch is ok, but it looks like its still there.

The engine is a 75kW.

Is the compressor actually turning over (best to check when the interior temp is above demand, so leave the car in sunlight for 2 or 3 hours)?

Try checking for broken wires, I had the same problem with a Fabia.

I drove the car for 5 hour the other day and it was hot as hell. But im not sure what you mean by "turning over"

Please see VAG USA technical bulletin attached. Check your compressor part number - can be seen from below with belly tray removed - Don't bother with dealer for diagnostic or regassing, try a good auto electrician and have him check the duty cycle on the compressor if the loading valve does not respond, its a new compressor. The dealer will charge c £1300 ! to change as per the technical bulletin. I have bought the three OEM parts for under £450, with another £150 to have them fitted. Rad fan(s) not running is another indicator that the loading valve is US, but check any fuses first. VAG diagnostics DOES NOT show the fault(s) in the compressor. Compressor/condenser/expansion valve suppliers; Compressortech, B'ham. Autoairconparts, B'ham - both have websites. These compressors do NOT have clutches but rotate all the time the engine is running, and compress the refrigerant under the action of the loading valve. The pressure sensor -"thrust sensor" in VAG parlance, is not a switch but a combined lp/hp sensor, these also fail but show up on diagnostic. If needed I can give part numbers in another post. These failures are almost epidemic on Octavias/MkV Golfs/A3/Leons and various BMW & MB. Skoda UK denies there is any real problem but offered me £277 as goodwill toward repair at dealership - fat chance

Hi there

Have you checked the pressure in the system first? I had a problem with my Octavia last year after a regas and a week later it stopped working. The fans did not fire up when the AC button was pressed. Compressor was fine and checked all wiring etc and the fan relay on n/s chassis leg - all okay. Traced back to pressure switch (on bulkhead) and my mate said it is either the switch or no gas in the system!!

Anyway, took back to aircon specialist who confirmed that all the gas had escaped but could not trace where it had escaped too!!! (He was really puzzled!). A further regas (free) and a treatment for the aircon system similar to 'radweld' cured the problem and, touch wood, has been fine ever since.

What I am trying to say is that the fans will not operate if there is no gas pressure in the system. The pressure switch will kick in and act as a 'failsafe' as the gas also contains a lubricant for the compressor.

Hope this helps!

Hi! How do you check if the compressor is good and where is the fan relay on a Octavia 2? Also, the small radiator fan never worked on my Octavia 2 and the A/C does not working. I've checked the pressure in the system and everyting is fine. How do I check the compressor?
