xP reinstalled - what next!!

Featured Replies

Hi all have just formated and reinstalled xp on my (other) computer.

Back up all the importants stuff before hand.

First thing I did was reinstall my Internet Security software but then I hit the first hurdle - can get teh PC to connecty to the. Have tried the net connections wizard but no sucess.

PC is hard wired to my router - whcih is working ok as this laptop is connected to it.

Any ideas:confused:

I have an installation program that came with teh router but am wary of using that as I don't want to upset the settings on the router (long story involving setting up VPN for my work laptop!)

Is DHCP on on the router? And if so does your PC have a fixed IP that the router gives it or is it dynamically assigned?

Are drivers for the network adapter installed on the PC (i.e. does it show up in the network connections thing in control panel)? I have this problem whenever I install Windows XP as the drivers for mine aren't included with windows.

You will proberbly need drivers for the network card fited in the computer. Its not always as simple as reinstall XP and away you go. Right click on my computer and click properties, go to the hardware tab and then device manager. Look for a yellow ?, and then expand that. do you see ethernet controller or unknown device?.

As above, sounds like a driver problem.

I never do any work on a PC without having another internet connected PC and memory stick to hand ;)

No, the DHCP server is of has it need to be to allow me to make a VPN connection when using my worK laptop.

I have set up a static IP address using teh "alternative confiuration" tap in network properties. - this work on all teh otehr devices that are connected to this router.
