Red Line on PD170

Featured Replies

As you know, the 'red zone' starts at 4500rpm. However, the car seems very eager to go way past this and still deliver good power. Out of fear though, i haven't gone past 4550 (accidentaly when changing gear as my foot won't come off the long pedal quick enough)

Question is - Is 4500rpm as much as this engine will safely manage, or is it quite safe to a bit further into the red?

Many thanks

I imagine the electronic limiter is around 4,800 rpm if PD engine, but I've heard the CR engines rev higher?

My PD is the same, Revs easily well into the red line with no significant drop in power. I seem to do it quite alot by accident when overtaking something really slow in second gear. In past cars it was quite obvious when you were getting near the red-line but 2nd gear in my vRS is quite hard to tell unless you look. Maybe having the stereo turned down might help matters. :D

The rev limiter on my PD140 is just over 5K RPM, I have hit it many times without any problems.

Dont forget that when your diesel car is taken for its MOT then as part of the test it is revved all the way to the limiter and held there for a period of time to check the emissions.

Hit limiter on quite a few occasions but to be honest it quickly runs out of puff after 4500 anyway to you have to be in 1st / 2nd to hit the limiter.
