Common problem? Octavia rear R/H caliper seize?

Featured Replies

Hi

I was wondering if any other forum members have had their rear right hand brake caliper seize on the Octavia or other models?

When I bought my Octavia 3 years ago I had to replace the rear R/H caliper with a new one. Now I have exactly the same problem so I'm wondering if there is something else causing it to seize or its just a common fault. I have a friend who owns a MK4 Golf GTI and his rear R/H caliper had seizing problems too. Is this a common VW/Audi problem?

PS Any advice on refurbishing my current one would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

It's quite common for VAG rear calipers to seize.

Seems to me like its a problem with the brake pads releasing which causes the seize. Is there anything in the mechanism that might need replacing other than the caliper?

It's probably more to do with modern servicing schedules than a fault with the caliper. In the old days the calipers and pads would be removed, cleaned, inspected, lubricated and reassembled at least once a year. The car manufacturers, (not just VAG) only require the pads to be inspected, without even removing the wheels, at each service which can be at up to 2 year intervals. I think this is why brakes seize up.

Not many places service brakes properly now, although I know that Derek Slacks still do!

My caliper seized as well i took it apart greased the piston lubricated all i could kept working the piston in and out whilst greasing and it worked for me.

Hi all, thanks for your replys.

It ended up being a broken dust seal round the caliper piston. Water and dirt was getting in causing friction on the piston and stopping it moving properly. Took it all to bits and cleaned out with meths.

Its all working again but the seal will need replaced. Anyone have any sources for caliper repair kits?

The part number for the set of seals appears to be 1J0698671 but if you order from Skoda you might want to check that is right, those are for the TEVES caliper which is fitted to rear disc brake Octavia models other than the 4x4 and vRS.
