Yey,.... Back in a VRS (minor issue though?)

Featured Replies

Evening all,

First of all many thanks to Seb (bad boy) as I'm now the proud new owner of an immaculate 56 plate VRS Tdi with low miles and excellent spec.

Drove it back from Bristol to Leicester this afternoon and at speeds of 80Mph+ there's a vibrating sound that sounds like something is loose in the engine bay or on the underneath of the car at the front.

I can't feel anything through the steering wheel and the car feels planted, but at high speed as if something is flapping about? If I slip-streamed another car the noise disappeared until I pulled back out of the slip stream again !?

I've had a quick look under the front without jacking the car up but can't see anything obviously loose. I'll have another look in the morning but wondered if anyone had any suggestions ??

I'm not at all worried as the car is still under warrenty until October, but wondered if anyone had any thoughts to save me going to Skoda??

Sebastien, many thanks for your help today, I could tell you didn't really want to sell and I understand why as it's a lovelly car, I'm delighted with it.

but I'm sure your new place will be worth it..... You can't live in a car afterall.

And I'll definitely look after it:thumbup:

Could be the engine bay undertray flapping, if it's been damaged or removed at some time and not re-secured properly...

I'll jack it up tomorrow and have a good look, didn't seem obviously loose but I only had a very quick look :)

Other options are the air intake tube between the front of the car and the air filter or the engine cover on top of the engine.

Not sure that slip streaming would affect either of these though.

Undertray or Engine cover (known to come loose easily) get my vote.

You could also check anything else of a 'trim' nature e.g. radiator grille, lower bumper grilles, wheel arch liners.

Good luck, welcome to Briskoda and enjoy!

Ok cheers, I'll have a look at those also.

I would have thought anything loose would suffer reduced vibration when slip streaming due to the reduced air flow to the front of the car, so all suggestions are good ones at this point.

As I said before though, not concerned about it as it doesn't affect the way the car is driving it's just an annoying noise - I'm certain it's something simple.

All sorted,

popped into Clist & Rattle Skoda near Bristol this afternoon, had it up on the ramp in 10 mins, three bolts missing from the undertray - all replaced and now lovely at high motorway speeds

And of course, this was on a private road all the way, and not the the M4. Shame on you

In my defence I have paid for two separate driving skills days with ex-police driving instructors.

I learn't huge amounts on both days and I DO drive safely.

For anyone who hasn't had this type of instruction, which I guess is most people, it's excellent value for money and I thoroughly recommend it
