an old air cooled Volkswagen?

Having just returned to the air cooled VW scene, I am looking for ideas and inspiration. My '69 Beetle is a bit "tired" mechanically and will need a respray at some point soon (it has pink metalflake in it:eek:)

Pics welcome!!

How about fitting an air-cooled 911 engine

6 cylinder lump into a 4 cylinder hole= major headache (and 911 lumps are mega bucks!!)

If I was looking to spend that much I might just go for an impreza conversion (around £2k fitted...)

Now there's a thought...

PD130 from a Fabia vRS conversion. ;)

'they bolt straight in' ;)

I have two Beetles, but want none. Do you need any spare parts? '71 and '72 so the same, apart from the '72 has slightly larger windows than yours.

Seriously, both will be (are) are for sale and the '72 will most likely be broken so if you need anything post it up and I'll have a look.

All the best with your project

In all seriousness though Johnny there are lots of companies out there offering 1.8 to two litre versions of the aircooled type two engines with a fair bit of power. There was a firm called Chesil a while back that used to cannibalise old Beetles and turn them into 356 Speedster replicas and they had mildly spiced up 1.8 and two litre flat fours. Might be worth fitting one of those. There is a great book on the Volkswagen beetle by a guy called Laurence Meredith which showcases some lovely Beetles but sometimes original is best. Check it out on Amazon:thumbup:

my favourite conversion has always been the alfa 33/alfasud flat four engines.. and they come with downdraught dellorto carbs as standard

Chesil went bust about a year ago:mad: - I'd LOVE a 356 replica, but my current bug is too solid to cannibalise.

I have a mate who builds race engines for beetles (from 1835 to 2226cc with twin carbs, turbos etc) but again, they cost megabucks.

Initially I'll probably go with one of the "off the shelf" 1800s with a pair of twin carbs, but we'll see...;)

Whatever you do, please, please, please actually paint it!

I've seen one with an Ur-Quattro turbo 5 cylinder dropped in....

Seconded - the rusty, rat look is rubbish!

I like the Volks-rod type stuff with open wheels. And in general I like classic cars with modern engines. Character and reliability.

Would be better than rust! :)
