Guess what? Yup ANOTHER tyre thread

Featured Replies

Running 17" 225/45 W which the fronts need replacing. Rears still have 4-5mm.

I have to use Kwik Fit, as the lease co uses them, but hopefully can get a decent replacement.

Current are Michelin Pilot Primacy's which came from new on the car and have done 30,056 as of today.

Anyone any comments on the following?

Bridgestone RE050

Continental Conti-Sport Contact 2

Michelin Pilot Primacy HP

Continental Sport Contact 3

Pirelli P zero Rosso

Works car has the Michelin HP primacy's, and currently they're on target for 25K min of spirited co car driving, always fully laiden (parts etc).

But should I stick with the Michelins?

I'm in pretty much the same situation myself,

just about to press the search button & bingo,

someone else has saved me the hassle of asking....

2.0 TDI on 225/45/17

I've got Avon ZZ3 all round at the moment.

Done about 20k, fronts down to 3mm, backs about 6mm.

Pro's ...

Good wet & dry grip

Quiet

Sensible price (circa £80 each fitted)

Con's ...

MPG

Toying with going back down to the Avon ZV3 that I used to run on 1.9

Slightly less grip but better MPG & last slightly longer too.

Although very few people on here seem to like them.

Car was fitted with worn Conti Sport 2s when I bought it,

& they got louder & louder as they wore down.

Not even as grippy as Avon ZV3.

From that list I would plump for the Michelins again, yes. If you're happy with the way they grip and wear, then go for them again

Steve

I recently had 4 Bridgestone RE050A's fitted to my Octy vRS.

Initially, for the first 100 miles I wasn't overly impressed - I felt maybe I'd paid a premium price for a premium tyre and could have got away with spending less.

However after the 100 miles they really seemed to bed in well.

I am now extremely happy with them.

Low noise, amazing ride - when I'm cruising on the motorway things are so smooth.

Plenty of grip in wet and dry conditions - I'm not scared to throw the car around as I really trust the tyres.

Blimey, just done some price checks on blackcircles, kwikfit & national .... have all the rubber trees died?

Camskills still ok price wise though, phew!

Am in the same situation myself. I currently have Pilot Exaltos all round on my 18" alloys and was quite happy with them. However, they are not cheap to replace and the same applies to a few others on your list.

If you look through the forums, other tyres that are talked quite highly of are:

- Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas (Great reports although I am a little unsure as they appear to be described as 'summer tyres' and I suspect they may be soft, good grip but quick wearing)

- Falken F452 (some good reports and usually not too expensive)

- Toyo Proxes TR1 (a lot of good reports)

have you seen this thread?...

This is slightly different to the usual tyre threads though, as the OP has a leased car (fully maintained?) so has to use a certain company. Are you restricted to just tyres from the list posted above?

Steve

Just got back from my local independent, apparently Avon have split from Cooper Tire (USA) & are now part of Michelin. The ZV3 has been replaced with the ZV5 which is a clone of the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 but for less £££. So I'll probably get a pair in a few weeks £165 fitted

Continental Conti-Sport Contact 2

Continental Sport Contact 3

I would not bother with either of these. I found them to be noisy, offer poor grip and lasted 10k miles. Ran them on my previous car as they came fitted ( Conti 2's on the rear , 3's on the front)

Have you considered Goodyear F1 Asymestricals? They were so much grippier and quieter that I took them off before trade in and will be fitting them on new alloys once I get round to buying some.

Hoping they'll fit the Michelin HP's. However @£150+ a tyre (no idea trade discounts to the lease co) they may demand something cheaper, or I might not even get a say :thumbdwn:

The list was simply searching the kwikfit site to see what the choice were. In-store they may have others, but guessing those I listed every store should hold as standard stock???

If they do decide to fit some crap, I may pay the difference as looking to buy the car and save cash anyway. But not until it's had new fronts

The Primacy HP are a much better tyre than the Primacy IMHO and cost nothing like £150 a corner elsewhere so I guess it's just a good profit margin for them.

FWIW I think if you speak nicely to the guys at KF they will try and do it as the only ones they have in stock because they make more profit on them and you get the tyres you want too.

Thanks.

Going to sort them tomorrow, so will report back.

Well got some tyres.

They input the reg, it shows as a car maintained by lease co, they then put in the tyre sizes and tread depths, then after a few minutes wait, the store is given a list of tyres that may be fitted - and the store system cant be fudged, and cant pay extra to have better tyres. HP's werent on the list :(

Out of the choices (continentals, Avons, Dunlops, Firestones, Kumos, and a load of chepo ones), there were several Michelins, but of those listed that the lease co/kwikfit would authorise the only ones in stock were Michelin Pilot Sport 2 225/45 R17 ZR

I had Pilot sports fitted on my mk1 by the lease co from the standard Pilot Primacy's IIRC, but only had the car for another 7k. They seemed OK.

Not exactly what I wanted, BUT when I buy the car means one less think to worry about for a few years.

Have you had chance to test these much, as I'm looking at the Avon ZV5 which seemingly is a clone of these? Especially ...

Wet / dry grip

Comfort /noise

MPG

Obviously too early to tell about wear rates...

cheers ... Darren

Wet/dry seems comparable with the Pilot Primacy's. Much quieter.

PS2s are a great result, especially with what you could have had from KwikFit!

More performance orientated, so wet/dry grip will be improved, but perhaps at the sacrifice of wear.

I wouldn't be grumbling if I ended up with those fitted

Steve

IMO the P-Zero Rosso's are pants on anything other than warm sticky roads, and then if you compare them against tyres designed for summer/track there pants

... and they're noisy as hell, too. Avoid!

Guys as far as im aware Cooper USA still own Avon and they dont make a SV5 tyre its a ZV5

As for those slating Pirellis all i can say is its one of the best tyres ive used in Nero/rosso form....

Yup.

Unfortunately the system cant be fudged with my lease co as it's all electronic. The list has been pre-approved when they won the contract i guess, and it tells the people at the store what from the list they have to select from.

Still give the manager his dues he knew I wanted the Michelins, and suits him as his margins are better on them + higher sales cost means more turnover for store and better bonuses

Even got them nitrogen filled - and I assume free pressure checks for the life of the tyre?

Even got them nitrogen filled - and I assume free pressure checks for the life of the tyre?

Genuine question, as I've honestly never heard of that before.

Thinking back to school science, nitrogen is approx 70% of air anyway.

So what's the advantage of going 100% Nitrogen?

Less corrosion of the metal part of wheel as there's no moisture & oxygen?

Oops typo on my part regarding the ZV series.

Just looked at the Avon Tyres website, still says owned by Cooper Tire (USA),

presume my tyre guy got his info from a wholesaler?

  • Author

Nitrogen filling means the tyres shouldnt loose much (if any) pressure once set

Michelin every time, check out costco, and ats were buy 3 miche's get 4th free.

Well, I've gone with the Avon ZV5 at £165 fitted for the pair,

as it's less than a mile from the fitters, can't really make much comment on them yet!

Kwik Fit, Charlie Brown & National are all nearer to my house

but I went the extra (fraction of a) mile to keep an indie going.
