engine mountings

Featured Replies

has anyone had problems with engine mounting bolts?

Mine has just snapped ( the main M10 drivers side bolt).

it is going in to the dealers to get sorted under the waranty.

doesn't sound good :S faulty mounting bolts...hmm...wouldn't be surprised if a recall happens..

Recall, would that mean brand new cars for all :)

i bloody hope so ;)

Not come across that one myself.

What car is it and what mileage?

When carring out any work, i.e a cambelt change it is essential that the mounting bolts are replaced and new bolts are tightened up to the correct torque. This is because the mounting is designed in a frontal accident to snap off so the engine moves downwards and not into the passenger compartment. If the old bolts are reused (they are stretch bolts) the mounting may not work in the way its designed.

Also the bolts may be over tightened leading to failure.

is that a general thing over all cars then? if so engine mountings are far more advanced than i thought to have breakaway bolts. (silly me)

It is common practise these days.

Its not the bolts that break, its the mounting (if you notice they are mostly alloy these days). The point is if you dont fit new bolts its them that will be the weakest point not the mounting as its designed.

the car has done 18000 in since 01,11,2003 and it has been serviced at the correct service times. the dealer had only seen this problem once before. I am now driving a courtesy car a fabia 1.4 tdi untill it is fixed.
