whiteline bump steer kit now available

Featured Replies

looks like the bump steer kit is now available. for anyone wanting to wipe out bumpsteer. im prob going to get one as its only cheap,

reckon you can fit this yourself piece of p*ss. as long as you mark on the track rods where the original track rod ends were locked off with the bolt. then you wont need the alignment checking, and to be fair you can get it checked for free as well.

I take it from the video that once you've fitted these, you can't drive in a straight line ever again...

Seriously, what is this kit supposed to do?

my understanding is that when a car hits a bump and the suspension is compressed and released the tyres will toe in or out(change direction) due to the angle of the track rod.

according to whiteline the MK5 platform is prone to bump steer. They say a well setup car will normally have less than 2mm difference in toe in and out.

the mk5 platform supposably has 8.4mm toe-out @ 40mm compression and 4mm toe-in @ 40mm droop. so is pretty far out from that. This kit solves this.

basically imagine when your car hits bumps the wheels will move in or out in other directions to what you want, steering the car in different course, requiring more steering input from your self.

balance motorsport have them on their website but not available yet. £132 so a relatively cheap mod

Hmmm. Won't be one I rush into. I wonder what effect lowering (Eibachs, coilovers etc) has on track rod angle and thereby on bump steer...

its defiantely not for evryone, and if you mainly do road use then it might not be that worthwhile, but wit the amount of track work i do, and the plans for the handling it'd be sill to leave that out especially at such a small price

Hi Guys

I have just called Whiteline now

The retail is £128.01 + VAT for them

I am looking in to them now.....

Sarah and Guys, true bump steer is caused by toe changes with suspension movement. That much is true. To correct this means changing the trail links or rack position.

hence them moving the track rod end to the top of the housing on the strut, which must be a much more favourable position.

Dont really no how much difference this will make, but there must some improvement, and surely tyre wear will be reduced as the will not be fighting with each other in different directions as much.

thank you sarah interesting read. I was pretty close on there though in my attempt earlier.

Yes my dear , you was ;)

Good find Sarah, but the detail of that piece is only applicable to live axle cars with steering boxes - clues in the mention of steering box, Pitman arm and drag links.

The point with IFS and rack and pinion steering (Estelle/Rapid 130, and all FWD Skodas) is that the track rods need to be parallel to the wishbone when viewed from behind, and perpendicular to the wishbone pivot axis when viewed from above, to minimise bump steer. Even then you may not eliminate it unless you can get both rod ends to be the same height as the rear pivot points (or front if you have a rareish "front steer" car) on the wishbones.

You will need to re-track the car afterwards, and probably should do a full front geometry, because the distance from the inner rod end to the pickups on the trail links will have changed, since you've changed the length and/or height of the links.

valid point there ken, i didnt think about the re-positioning of the track rod changing the distance to the pickup ponts,
