Setting up a domain name

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm reasonably "with it" when it comes to technology etc, but setting up a domain name is something I've never done and have no clue what I'm doing.

Basically what I'd like to do is set up a site with the a .com and .co.uk domains, both going to the same place. Nothing exciting on the site, just.......well nothing really. Just a holding page until I think of something to put on there. I'd probably put images on there if anything.

And I'd like to have email addresses with the @domain.co.uk @domain.com (again, both going to the same place?). I think webmail is the best option, because I don't like Outlook and just like webmails really.

So a little summary

-I want domain.co.uk and domain.com but just for the sake of having them both, so they feed into the same place.

-email addresses.

-potential for a site, but not particularly important.

So what do I do?! Is going through the likes of 123-reg.co.uk all I need to do?

Any recommendations on other domain providers / hosts etc?

Thanks in advance! :o

123-reg.co.uk / uk2, whoever is doing the best price really. Your choice of host becomes more important when you want to do something with the site. Personally, I like 34sp.com and really don't like fasthosts.

For your email, when you register the domain, they'll normally throw in email forwarding, so I would say by far the best thing to do is to point it to a gmail account. That will nail any spam not taken care of by the domain host and is by far the best webmail to use. The forwarding should only add a couple of seconds to the transit time of the mail.

Thanks wega3k

I didn't really think as to what email forwarding was, but that's exactly what I need, so thanks for the tip with that.

Just set up the domains on UK2 for £11.50 for a .co.uk and .com which I don't think is too bad. Order is now being "verified by a billing representative"!

cool :)

You might need to sort out some hosting too if it's not included.

I use Domain City - DomainCity, Low Cost Domain Name Registration,Web Site Hosting, Email Spam Virus Scanning and find them good.

For you email plans, even for hosting, have a look at Google Apps. You get a hell of a lot of stuff to play with, and its totally free (for my non-commerical use anyway). Great email control and basically a full Gmail account for any alias you decide on. And you can set all .com and .co.uk mail for the same alias to goto one mailbox.

It needs a bit of setting up at your domain name company's side, for security as much as anything - to prove you own the domain! But also to point email away from any email services your host provides, and onto Google.
