Strange Noise

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I've had a funny noise in the car for the past couple of months, only happens between about 55mph and 70mph, it sounds like a loud whirring noise / a bit like an exhaust blowout, but the exhaust is fine. When accelerating the noise only starts around 55mph, and if I go over 75mph the noise goes away again. Seems to get louder as the car slows from around 70 to 60, but doesn't seem related to engine revs, so I'm thinking possibly something to do with driveshaft or wheels? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated

My thoughts would lean to wheel bearing. Probably the easiest thing to check for first off anyway.

How do I check it?

Firstly, try and identify which corner the noise is coming from. This is the most likely one to have the worn bearing.

You need 2 people, but one only needs to be able to press the brake pedal when told.

Jack the car up, hold the wheel top and bottom, and try to rock it. Note how much it rocks. Have your "lovely" assistant apply the brakes (no need to have the engine running), and rock the wheel again. If the play reduces significantly, you've found a worn out wheel bearing.

Cheers, will give it a go!

Wheel bearing's a probable cause, but have you checked that the noise is the same in 4th and 5th gears? That would be a clue - if it is the same, it's not engine or exhaust.
