Gearbox rebuilds?

Featured Replies

Before anyone says anything, my gearbox hasnt gone bang, its just not feeling as nice as i would like it to.

Is there any recommended companies that do gearbox rebuilds + strengthening (steel cage bearings maybe? modded synchros??)

the main reason i want to do it is because i really quite fancy a LSD, and im thinking while the box is off i might as well get it all sorted in one go!

cheers:thumbup:

Mine has gone bang, yesterday and am on the same quest :-) Been told it could be the diff which in turn is churning out goodies for the box to digest! Thinking about a 6 speed box and quaife but having trouble finding drive shaft.....and the box :-)

Well Mark

I had a problem with my gearbox for awhile.. I was finding it hard to get in gear and not shifting as smoothly as expected.. Also coming up to junctions when the car was rolling at a snails pace when engaging first it grinded/clunked into gear... Got two mechanics to check it out with no solution only change the gearoil.. Anyways long story short last week took off from a junction going from first into second a loud bang occurred! Not saying this will happen to yours but mite be worth taking a good look at the gearbox..

The end result of the bang was a new gearbox and clutch. New clutch due to all the gearoil all over the clutch causing it to slip and a 2" hole in the gearbox... When the gearbox was out on inspection a bearing had broke and caused the large hole in the gearbox casing :thumbdwn:

Probably not much help but thats my experience anyways...

Got her back today and going like a train so smiles all round again!!:)

Just ordered my recon box which comes with a 1yr warranty and standard diff that has been bolted instead of factory rivets. £695 including £150 returns deposit, flexible delivery and pickup terms all from VW PARTS UK VW CAR PARTS GOLF PARTS 100% CHEAPER VOLKSWAGEN LEASING VAN SPARES BMW VW SPARES VOLKSWAGEN SPARE PARTS SALVAGE AUDI SKODA SEAT CHEAP PART DEALER POLO LUPO Mine hasnt popped any holes so will get the £150 back... Just asking AwesomeSarah if they can do a deal on the ECS clutch kit now and will resurrect the beeatch next weekend......

you are having a laugh mate that is very very very very expensive

i just sold my gearbox for £150 notes

i broght a fully rebuilt new synchros....sandblasted case + lsd + uprated clutch and flywheel for £1000 fitted

you may want to shop around abit next time but if you want to throw money away i will have some

Fully reconditioned box with warranty and diff...doesnt seem a bad price at all considering there are dogs around for £260-340 that have just been pulled from motors with no warranty or come back. Shopping around sometimes is a nice luxury, which I did, mine will be fine and as I am fitting it myself it will be around £800 including the ECS clutch and flywheel kit from Awesome and a jolly nice time fitting it I am sure??!! I am sure the sandblased case added value to the whole affair for you though, note to self, must spend more time under the car looking at engine and gearbox cases..

read other post about diff

am on a budget as had no intention of doing the gearbox, you might have sold yours for £150 but was it worth a squirt?? Fitted Weitec coilovers last month and dont see the point of spending £600+ on a diff when I need a working box and diff. Most people cant drive for **** anyway so a diff isnt going to add to their effect on the road or track. Not casting aspersions but merely saying. Not into pretty engine bays, takes enough time detailing the car with the **** weather we have but am sure someone will enjoy a sandblasted something under the bonnet at show 'n' shines etc. You always pay a premium for a warranty which is reflected in the price, doesnt bother me cos if it goes bang, it goes back, assuming they are still in business of course. Sods law, spend money on a nice diff and the big ends go. Assume the worst and anything better is a bonus  Rather buy a decent sports car than pimp my skoda to be honest or drop an R32 motor in it and go from there, but thats just me....

okay mate enjoy the forum:rolleyes:

as always
